Fixing up a rescue baler

Working on a New Holland 271 hayliner. So far there are 2 things wrong. First, the major one, the tine bar sprocket was missing the needle bearings! Previous user wrapped wire around stub axel and packed it with grease and fiber washers. Not sure if that was the cause, but second problem was the needles were snapped off. I have replaced them and when I look up towards the bale chamber the right (from the back) needle is about 1/2 inch higher than the left. I would guess the right one probably hit the plunger and bent it higher.

Anyone know if this is needs to be adjusted or rebent? Also, one of the bearings on the plunger is squeeking. Does the plunger come out easily to replace it?

I can post some pix if necessary.

Thanks,

Warren

At the risk of being a fuddy duddy, you really need the manual. Has a section about adjusting the needles. I have the manual for my NH269, can't tell you how many times I must reread the instructions to make adjustments. gobble

Like TT says. There's one on ebay now starting at $4.95.It"s easier to read then having it explained. The bearing REPAIR you say was made amazes me.Some peoples mechanical intelligence proves there ignorance. If you can't fix it right don't own it.
Good Luck.

I have the little operators manual. It"s about 8.5 x5.5 inches. Is there a better manual than that? Anyway, I read that one and found a short paragraph that mentioned adjusting the needles. I didn"t realize the mounting bolts adjusted them as well. I pressed the bearings into the sprocket and got it back on and the chain tightened. So on with the adjusting tomorrow.

BTW those videos are amazing!

I don't recall exactly which baler manual I looked at, but it was a later model baler manual, maybe 15 years old and it had a lot more info than my original 68 manual. Might ask around to look at some newer ones in the area. The mechanicals may differ over a a 50 year time span, but the causes are similar and the later manuals had much better pictures.

Hope that helps.

rescued nh 271... Did dig out the little manual I had for the other 271 we use to bale, these pictures are really pretty bad as far as detail. If anybody has some good ones they would post that would be great.

Next on the list are the needles, they were broken just in front ot the mounts to the yoke rod. Picked up two new ones, got them in and adjusted as far as possible but the needles still won"t clear the twine disk. the clearance on the twine fingers is ok and timing seems right.

I did a side by side comparison to our good baler and can"t really see any difference on the angles between the needles and the yoke rod.

The manual isn"t much for detail on this.

Any knowledge or ideas appreciated or is there something I'm missing from reading the manual?

Thanks,

Warren
