replaced pull rope on 5HP Briggs &S. rear action tiller with appropriate rope but doesn,t seem to have enough length to start engine. Do I need a longer rope or did I do something wrong when i installed it. i'm a first timer at this

If you used the right sized rope and the correct length, you should be good. If you used too short a length it should be obvious. You want to almost fill the pulley.

It's also possible to wind the spring too tight and that will mimic too short a rope.

Could be a few different things wrong. Rope to short or you did not wind the spring up enough, or the dogs do not engage as fast as they should. I could go out and measure one of the many pull start engines I have and give you an idea how long the rode should be depending on if your has the rope going up the handle or just down at the engine
