I am looking at buying a 494-A planter and I would like to know some opinions about this planter. I have one of those Precision Series 494-A planter pamphlets that I know a little about the planter. I would like to hear from you,(the reader's) opinions about the planter. Also I was wondering what would one be worth. From the road it looks good, but I never looked at it close up. Would $100 and lower be best, or would they run higher? Last question. Would a Farmall H pull one of these planters? Thanks for the input.

I gave $25 for my 494A last August. It is in good shape except for the fertilizer runners, which I replaced from a parts planter in April(also $25). The fertilizer bins were a little pitted in the inside, but still pretty solid. 20 some sets of plates came with it. I planted with it a couple of weeks ago and I was very pleased with it. Big improvement over a 2-row AC. From what I hear and seeing how many are still around I think it's safe to say the 494A was the best cornplanter around in the 60s. I know of at least 2 others still being used just in my township. The IH 56 from the late 60s is a very reliable choice as well. I went to some auctions in March and April and most in good condition brought $70-$100. And then I see a 290 2-row bring $350, in average shape. If the fertilizer bins are shot, I wouldn't go above $30-$40 if the bins are good and it's field ready, try to talk him down to $75. Good Luck.

Do you know where I could purchase soybean plates for my 494 JD planter? I have been trying to make two passes giving me 15 inch rows, but I think I need a 24 cell plate. Presently I'm trying to use a round corn plate. Thanks for any info you have.

I have owned two 494As, one regular and one 494AN. They were very good planters, and they still are. Parts should be no problem, many interchange from the old 490s up to the 1240s. My neighbor planted about 900-1000 acres a year with a 494A and a Farmall H. Early 494s have gear transmissions, while later ones use sprockets and chain to set rate.

My H would probably have a hard time lifting one because the pump is wore - full of seed & fert, could be a strain. Otherwise you should have enough power.

Pretty good planter, parts are harder to find, but so many were out there you should be able to scrounge things you need.

Here in New Jersey, a nice 494A with good fertilizer boxes will bring $500. W/o boxes, $150.
