Well... if you want it to look like a brush job, use a brush. Really, if you just want to protect the metal and you"re not worried about it looking too particular, then that works fine with minimal prep. If you want near showroom appearance then take it down to bare metal and prime it, then paint...
I don"t think I"d do a whole lot of disassembly myself unless it"s real bad scale in behind stuff that needs chipped off and covered.
Keep it simple. Brush or rattle can works fine.
