JD 709 Blades?

Anybody know if there is a place to get a suction blade for a late model 709? Mine needs a flat suction blade. JD only carries offset blades. If I put an offset blade on mine; the blade will be below the skid plates. Somewhere down the line they changed the blade holder from straight, to about a 3 inch drop to protect the center bolt; but never made a suction blade to counter the offset. (dealer claims).

If no blade available; then can I change the blade holder to the old style without changing the bolt on the gearbox? Instead of changing blades to go from heavy brush to grass I could just change the bar & leave the blades on it!

Your dealer has it backwards. We bought a 709 new and it had an offset blade holder. It broke and was replaced with a straight one. Mike

Do you not have your serial number??? There are three possible blade holders. It makes a difference in the angle of the blade and the bolt size. Without the serial number it is a crap shoot.

As for changing the blade holder that is out as the gearbox changed in there and the bottom output shaft/spline is different. The direction of rotation changed in there too. One of the gear cases turn CCW, serial number 70,000-70,499.

Post us your serial number and I can try to help you more. There are several after market suppliers that have blades but I need the JD number to cross them over.

There are four serial number ranges:
0-49400 angled down holder
49401-69999 straight holder
70000-70499 straight holder
70500-up angled down holder

The early serial number with the angled down holder shows a suction blade being available. The newer angled down holder does not show a suction blade being available.

Need the serial number to know what you need.

All I see is flat blades for that serial number range.

There are none available that I can find from JD or any of the after market suppliers for that serial number.

Do you have any black smiths around you??? You can take a set of straight blades and make them into suction blades. You can do it with a big rose bid heating tip but a forge works better as you can get the whole end hot at once.

I have done it on other mowers. I just heat the whole end red hot and turn the back edge up. I make both side match in height. I then anneal the blades by oil cooling them. Take a grinder and balance them and you are good to go.
