neighbor has an older jd 71 planter ? with fertilizer box.
it has emblems on the chain covers "71"
the fert box is a big square type that sits in front of seed boxes and the auger has a chain driven gear that goes to a small tire that turns it.
So is this the correct model ?
Will fert. box from a 494 494A 1240 work ?

this one is a 25B
the wheels drive the seed boxes and fertilizer boxes.
each unit is separate, great little planter for small plots and truck patches.

Dave, have only ever seen one planter with the 71 unit planters and that one is in a scrap yard but the units were good and avaible this spring but it was a 4 row pull type tool bar and do not remember if it had fertilizer or not. The type of boxes that are on maxwell99 unit would more likely be the end boxes off a 6 row 694, 694A or the 6 row versions of the 12XX series planter as they are only a half box where the 4 row and inner boxes of the others are a doubble or 2 row box. Do not know if that ever was put on a 2 row tool bar planter or not, have never seen a planter like his. Have no idea what the different models are that was used to make his up but the seed units would be one model, the tool bar a second model and the fertilizer a 3rd model.

Dave : 71 unit planter was never available with fert. att. they could be mounted to a fert.[unit] 'cart' tool bar ,like JD 184 ,4row or 206-208 ,6 or 8 row... my guess is it a home made att. or something farmerize your neighbor has..

That's what I was thinking, you buy the individual pieces, bolt them on a bar, and add what you want. There wasn't really a 71 planter, just 71 planter row units. Assemble how you will.

that was my thoughts also, as ive googled everywhere and didnt find one like it.
question ,was there another model 2 row with fert. that has a training wheel (i call it) that runs the fert.
yet his has "71" on the chain covers, that was all we got to go by.

I think that is a side dresser fertilizer attachment for a rear mount cultivator as they would have had that drive.

what are you boys talking about,

that my little planter, 2-row with 25B planter units is Bastardized from 2 or 3 different planter parts.

here is a picture of another planter, tool bar has 4-25B planter units attached with fertilizer boxes, just like mine has two.

I do not think different parts were mated together as everything fits and works together fine as it should.

you can loosen the tool bar clamp and move each planter unit in/out or take them off. I did see another option to my planter, it had a guide flat disc blade, like a plow coulter blade, in the center to help stabilize the planter so you would get less side to side drift, mine does not have that option.

it does a great job and the corn comes right up using the planter.
I would think its a late 50's or early 60's model.
