john deere 494 planter plates

I know what you are asking, but....

JD was pretty consistant with their plates, weren't they? All the same, anyhow anything in the past 70 years?

You just need to match up your corn size to a plate size. There are quite a few different sizes of seed.

They have their own part numbers, but will give you some ideas.

Ask the folks that sold you the seed, the seed company usually has it printed on the bag, or on a tag on the bag.

I'd suggest asking around of some older farmers in your area. Chances are most of them have a bucket full of plates in the back of the barn left over from when all planters used them. All Deere planters since about the 50's have used the same plates; any Deere plate without the bar across the center hole (known as "open type") will work in your planter.

Gary,
In this forum, go back to 4-10-13. A man named Paul helped me bring to date a planter plate info piece I wrote a few yrs ago.

First look up "JD 290" planter topic of about April 10. Pad down until you come to a blue marker named "LA on plates" or something like that.

Hopefully my info on plates will help you.

You don"t need every plate for your planter, just the plates to match the seed your dealer is selling you. Need more help, let me know.

Dad always bought flats and had 694,695 &697 corn plates and the 1255 soybean plates as the chart below shows, once in awhile we would borrow some from the dealer if we didn't have the right ones. Later a neighbor gave us a bunch of plastic plates. You could have all I could find if you were in swMn. I think a round would have worked better in a plate planter vs. a flat but that's what we did and it worked. If you are going to plant corn over 20,000 try to find 24 cell plates so the planter doesn't have to run so fast to get population, put an ad on craigslist, by the time people get done calling you will probably have hundreds of them for next to nothing

Hi guys. Looking for advice on building a 71 model 2 row planter. I have both newer model 71 drive units and just picked up (4) 494 hoppers this morning... will these work with the 71 model?

We could use a set of (4) B2 24 cell plates. We've got just about every other size, just not B2's. We used B1 plates last year when our seed was B2 and it worked, but it'd be nice to have the right size. This year it was all B1.
