father in laws planter wont plant corn close enough. the plates are correct. Been reading about the sprockets and chain. We have it on the small gear in fron now. It does a bigger gear next to it. I also have read about a gear selector on the planter. Cant find aolt of info about it. He would like the seed to be 4-6" apart instead of the 8-12" it is dropping now. any help
thanks
Glen

Increasing the drive gear's size, or decreasing the driven gear's size will increase the amount of seed planted.

Never worked with an old JD, but should have likely 2 places it has different sprockets and or different gear sets to change the spacing. Setting both places gives you many different spacings.

A manual with a planter, baler, or combine is a really, really good thing????

There are very many helpful bits here, including a PDF parts manual. If you are interested in the planter its worthwhile to copy and past these links. If you are like someone yesterday and too lazy to bother pasting the links yourself, then god help you.

I'd sure buy a manual for a planter I wanted to use, there are too many adjustments and setups to try to just wing it.

I believe there are also 2 types of plates, high and low population plates. To get to 6" spacing on that old of planter you will probly need the high pop plates. I think they are 18 or 24 cels each. Ate least that is what case and IH have and that is what I'm familiar with.

Thanks Guys.

Well its a long story on how I get to work on the planter now.

So May father in law says before he let someone borrow it a few years ago it planted just fine. It planted the correct spacing. It sat broke for a few years then I found this page and found the parts it needed.

Yes I have to get a manual for it,but I was hoping someone could tell me were some of the adjustments are on it is all. We do have toe correct plates. The newest plates we are looking for are b-150s. I an search for some info to test out before planting season

Should be on the front left side. right on the main frame. it is a slide lever. i believe it has 3 speeds.

Glen, You say you have the correct plates. To help you a little bit I need to know what the stamped letters on the plates are.

For example, you are looking for B150....but like most plastic plates they come in 16 cell and 24 cell, and in each configuration they are the same color, gold for that size.

I have a feeling your planter has the sprocket settings set for 24 cell plates, so if you have 16 cell plates in the planter the plates are turning too slow...resulting in longer spacing between kernel drops (and lower population).

Count the "openings" (cells) along the outside edge and let me know how many there are...16 or 24.
Some plates would have B150-16 and the companion plates would have B150-24. And same color.

Historically, when the 290 planters were built they came with the sprockets set for 16 cell plates because plant populations were very low in those days. As populations got higher and higher the operator just changed the sprockets to make the plates spin faster. At some point those plates spun too fast which made very uneven stands or too many skips.

Then plates started appearing with 24 cells; then the operator set the sprockets for 24 cells and the plate rpms slowed down. At todays pops often running 32,000 and higher even 24 cell plates are really spinning fast and the operator needs to slow the tractor for accurate seed drop.

One big favor you need to do for yourself: Go to a JD dealer and see if he can get you an operator's manual for a 290 or 490(4 row). Or go to EBay or somesuch source or maybe someone on the JD forum might have one to sell to you. That manual tells you exactly what you need to do for proper sprocket settings.

I wrote a long article a few years ago about these problems as they come up in the springtime. I was in the seed business big-time years ago and grew up with plate planters and the transition to plateless planters.

I am going to try to find that article and see if someone can help me figure out how to forward it for usage this year.

Glen, please get back here with what you are finding on your plates.

my 290 has a transmission as well as the sprocket changes, I know in high gear it plants very heavy, I can post a pic of the shft lever if you like it is right by the gear box cnt

LA, I believe I have your article in my list below. Was a nice write up, well with anyone looking at it.

Paul,

Do you know how to move that "09 article to today"s entry? If you do know, would you please do that? You have my OK with that.

Thank you very much,

Been awhile since i saw one. Nutty's pics proved me wrong. the lever is on the right, and number 2,3,4. sorry for the misinformation.

Ok guys if this stupid head cold give me a break today I have alot of info to go on. I am going to head down and look this planter over.

I see the trannny numbers and understand where it is so that really help. should be able to figure this thing out for him before he wants to plant.
The JD manuals should be here in a few days until then you guys have been a great help.
Thank
Glen

Just pulled a book out. As you have found out there are 3 trannsmission settings marked 2-3-4 that I do not understand their reasoning for marking them like that, then there are 3 different sprocket sizes, a 7 tooth, 13 tooth and 15 tooth, So I do not have to type as much these figures will be in this order, first is cell count, second is shift lever the 7 tooth, 13 tooth and 15 tooth.

16 - 2 - 27.3" - 14.2" - 12.7"

16 - 3 - 18.2" - 9.8" - 8.5"

16 - 4 - 13.6" - 7.3" - 6.3"

24 - 2 - 18.0" - 9.8" - 8.5"

24 - 3 - 12.1" - 6.5" - 5.6"

24 - 4 - 9.0" - 4.9" - 4.2"

These figures are based on a 28" diameter tire or steel wheel and the 6:00 X 16" or the 6"70 X 15" are as close as you can come to that size, modern sizes I don't have a chart before me but they would probably be too wide the chain would rub on the tire.

Oh I'm sorry LA and all, I pasted the wrong link there!

Now I can't find it quickly, man you wrote a lot of good stuff about planters over the years.

This one is good:

But not the one I saw yesterday.

Got to go move snow now, will try to find it again this evening. Sorry for my confusion!

LA on plates

Paul,

You moving snow, where are you located?
Here in the land of dairy cows we had no snow, 3" of rain. Weather-missers now declare the drouth is over for us. West of the Miss. R. is another story, "they say".

Thanks for your expert help,

I'am sure your planter has only 2 sprockets, large 13 T. & small 6 T. on drive shaft. And 6 T. on driven shaft (gear box).. And correct seed plate (16 or 24 cell) must match seed size!, one kernel per cell not two.. chart is for late model "50's" , 290 planter....

Some expert, ha.

We've had 8 inches of very heavy snow and lots of drizzle and sleet in the past 2 days. I'm 60 or so miles north of Windom, MN, they had all the power lines into town knocked out from the ice storm yesterday. They hope to get back up tomorrow.

Schools let out early yesterday, and don't know of a school within 70 miles of me that was open today, was a full scale blizzard for an hour or 2 this early morning.

Still snowing lightly right now.

Next week Wed and Thurs are forecast 50% chance of snow showers still....... Warmest day in the next 2 weeks gets up to 46, most don't hit 40 yet.

It's making up for last year around here!

We've gone from too dry to plant corn to too cold to plant corn.
