Corn Planter Problems

Have a IH 185 corn planter that has dificulty with the small amount of corn I plant.

The corn stays up on the sides and doesn not fall down to the plate causing skips.

Anyone have an idea to hot to eliminate the skips on the IH?

Should I look at switching to a cole or Brinly corn planter? If I can fine one?

Perhaps take a GardenWay and build an adapter to make it tractor mount?

Suggestions / Advice?

How good is the GardenWay at metering the corn seed?

eee, never heard of that problem, but maybe clean the interior of the hopper and paint everything with an epoxy paint so it is slick and the seeds will fall.

Do you mean Earthway planter??
If so, I don't think you will be happy with it. I bought one to plant my market garden a few years back, and while it was better than dropping seed by hand, I was often frustrated by it's performance. I mounted it under the belly of my Farmall Cub, so I could watch it drop seed. It worked, but not well.
Look at Jeng Clean seeders if you are planting more than corn. I believe Johnny's select seeds is selling them now, along with some other online retailers.

If you are only put a a hand full of seed in the hopper they do tend to pile up and not drop into the cells of the planter plates. I usually try to put enough seed to fill the bottom of the hopper a couple of inches thick. The extra seed keeps the seeds feeding into the plates and not just piling up on the sides of the hopper. I plant a field corn and sweet corn with a JD 494A planter, only time it skips is when the seed hopper is not full enough to cover the floor.

Yep earth way

I guess not a good solution

Does a cole planter have the same issue? Or can it handle a smaller amount better than the IH?

No personal experience with the Cole. Heard mixed reviews. They've been around for a VERY long time, so they must have something going for them.
By the sounds of it, the answer may be for you to just buy an extra pound or two of seed to keep the plates covered. Cheaper than buying a new planter...

This might work, find a can or something just the size of the seed plate to where you can get it down as tight as possible and fasten in place and just put the seed in the space between that can and the hopper, could possibly make it take less seed to keep the plate covered.

Yes the Cole does the same thing but not as bad if I recall. No planter with plates either flat or slanted will do well when almost out of seed.

Sees,

I would buy extra seed to get enough so the planter work properly also if it is a two row planter just fill one hopper and make more passes. The extra will keep for a few years if stored in a cool dry place. You will have two benefits from doning so 1) you will have a good stand and 2) you'll be ahead of the price increase from year to year.
