Wood Stave Silo

Here's a shot of my latest purchase. An old wood stave silo. It'll look good next the other 19th c. buildings on my place.

I guess this could be considered a farm implement (building)

We had a 40' one build back in the mid 60's. Guys putting it up were up on top walking around with nothing but the thickness of the stave below their feet.

I think that one was made to be a grain bin. Does it have any tags that say Unadilla Silo Co. The early ones were put together with very few pins. The last ones they made, were put together with what they called "dowels" that were steel pins about 6" long and not visible on the inside or outside. Really tough to take apart. That will make a real nice addition to your place.

My dad moved a 10 x20 wood stave silo in one piece. Had some 1/2" popple lumber sawed and nailed it aroune the inside and then cross braced the inside.Tipped it onto a wagon with one tractor pulling and one holding back. Moved it several miles and tipped it back up. Don't think our B AC did the tipping. If I remember right it took the neighbors WD 45. Still was in decent shape when I pulled it over and dismantteled it. Used most of the staves for skirting on a pole shed.
