I went to look at a 449 corn planter today, the price is right but it does need a bit of work. There should be a hydraulic cylinder on it to raise and lower it but It is missing, I have a new cylinder but want the option to not use that. I would like to know if anyone ha rigged up Manuel lift for it.
Thanks,
Wade

Those clutch lift planters are very scarce and finding a complete clutch lift is just about impossible. I have one here that somebody took the clutch off before I got it, been thinking of trying to take a clutch off an Oliver 26 drill and rig it up that way but I think it will be more than it is worth to go that way being it would be a modified planter. A complete in decent condition clutch lift with fertilizer is worth close to a thousand dollars. Last year took an Amish friend to auction to buy a planter, the 449A and he paid I think $950 for it plus the cost of getting it home of over a hundred mile and this year is looking at putting in $300 worth of parts to get it field ready, supposed to pick up those parts wed. Got this 449 for parts thinking more would fit his planter but his has disk seed openers and this has shoe openers and the fertilizer openers are different. They are the only 4 row planter that was built that could be set for 30" rows and that was avaible with a clutch lift that can be pulled by horses. At that time most were hydrolick lift and so the few remaining units even cylinder lift are high priced even for parts. If you have a tractor that you can use the cylinder then do it as to convert for you would not be worth it.

Thanls for the info! I really appreciate it. The planter I am looking at needs disk opener bearings, are they available?
I was hoping to pull it with one of our older tractors but maybe the newer ones will work and I have a cylinder brand new that I never used. Thanks!

Wade, I need to ask first of all is it a 449 or a 449A as they used different parts. Does the seed openers have a center dirt cap that fastens on with 3 1/4" diameter bolts or is it a drive on cap more loke on any other free rolling wheel? Slightly different parts inside. If your planter is a 449 it will have a welded frame and be the older model while if the ends of the frame are bolted on it is the 449A version. I am just as we speak putting in those bearings and If I know exactly what you have I can give you part numbers and prices. The seed opener disks new are 12.5" in diameter and I think expencive but we got the bearings for a buck and a quarter each, but not thru the dealer.

Wade,
I have a 449A I'll be selling some parts off of. My email is open if interested. I don't know your location as shipping heavy items is alway a consern and can kill a deal.

Figured you had decided not to sell them and it was before I first was in contact with you that I had that Idea and gave up on it as too much work. Will send you an email later Leroy
