planter size/ barn door size

looking at getting my own planter, like to find a jd 1240,
1250,7000 or a white 5100. 4-6 row planter. what size barn door
do i need to get a 4 row or 6 row planter? i have a 15ft x 12ft door
but starting to think i may make it a 20ft x 12ft.
thanks

6 wide will definitely not fit. I really doubt if a 6 narrow or 4 wide will either. 4 narrow may but a 15 foot door will be a snug fit for a lot of stuff.

Markers are the problem on a planter.....

I had to lock up the makers to fit in the 16.5 foot machine shed door with my 4 row wide 7000. It might, just might, go in a 15 foot door, but that would be tight.

I put a 24 foot door on my new shed. Now I still have to fold down the markers on my 20 foot soybean planter.... Sigh. Doors are always a tad less than their advertised size - the actual opening is smaller...

Dads big shed is the one with the 17 foot and 16.5 foot doors. I donno how one door got smaller than the other, just how it came out.

Relative only has double the acres I do, and his sprayer barely fits in a 12 foot high shed door. Something else on the size of equipment..... Bigger doors!

Six row will not fit, 6 x 30 inches equals 15 foot even, and a planter has to be wider than that.....

You might find an 8 row that folds that might fit, but you will lose out on fertilizer options. And measure first, 15 foot is skinny.....

That's what I'm finding out. Oh we'll live and learn. I think I'm going to spend my money making it a 20ft door. And look for a planter next year. :)

On JD planters it would depend on what frame they are. A JD 7000 conservation planter had two different frames for the four row planter. The narrower one was for 4x30 or 4x38 it would fit in a 15 foot door with the markers locked up. The wider frame which was used on the 4x38 or 6x30 took a full 16 foot to get through with the markers locked up. Slide the marker heads out of the arms will make the planter about a foot narrower.

A JD 1240 4x38 will go in a fifteen foot door. A 1250 will not it is a wider frame.

I do not think any 6x30 planter will go in a 15 foot door unless it is a Kinze turntable planter.

We out grew our 12' doors very soon after the barn was built in 1980. We built little carts for the 5100 drill and the 1250 planter, and pushed them in sideways. Get your planter this year, if you want, I'm sure with a little ingenuity you can get it in there. You only have to do it twice a year.

I thought about that. Making some kind of dolly and slide stuff in sideways. If you hav any pictures of how you did it I would like to see them.
Thank you.

No, there were never any pictures, and the dollies have long since cut in half to serve some other purpose. They were simply 12x12" angle iron frames with four casters each. Just jackknife one end of the implement through the door, enough to get it with a floor jack.
