Boy,that sparks a memory. When I was a senior in high school, our government class went to the courthouse and sat in on a case. A well driller was suing a potato farmer for not paying for the irrigation well he had drilled. The farmer claimed they had broken the casing when they pulled it back up after they dropped the screen in. They testified that they had made a contraption out of three weeder times and had slid it down the well. Said it squeeled all the way down to where the alleged break was then quit making any noise when it got to the break.
I would imagine a lot of those things met a similar fate. Got cut up for another use.

See a few in use on Amish farms. We used to have one - bolted on to back gangs of cultivator on JD B. Dad used it on primarily emerging corn.
Just the back gangs and the weeder. Amish typically have a cart where the weeder hangs in front of the two wheels, and the horse.
Guess it was somewhat effective if you got to the weeds just as they were sprouting.

if i remember right, alan in nebraska posted pics of him pulling a rod weeder in the field. pretty slick lookin deal.

we sold Morris equipment as a sideline a sold a nuber of rod weeders we kept a new 36' on and used it for years I liked the way it killed weeds, if they went over the rod they were dead but you do need to have well loosened ground to use them we moboard plowed every spring then and it worked well, they even make a very nice seed bed for planting but we found here when planting winter wheat they lifted the cheat grass seeds up to perfect depth for growing along with the planted wheat causing issues so we quit using it, but then about 20 years ago we removed the rods and installed some cutting edges and made a leveler out of it I like it a lot maybe even better than before cnt

I've got a couple I found that I was going to melt down to pay fir the new swather but I got the one loaded and then I decided to turn the drive wheel and it still worked so unloaded it goina keep it its an old john deere 400 I think it has been sitting on one of my cousins rock piles for over 30 years and it is excellent shape. Then I've got another Morris that's about 30 feet that has cultivator shanks in front I can't decide whether I should send it to china yet.

no you can pull it with a 100hp at 4 to 5 mph but with the bigger power you can run 8-10 mph and idle back the level action of it works better at the faster speeds if the conditions will allow it, and you can work ground in a hurry also

We use a JD 800 rodweeder. There are still some flex king rods in the area but parts are getting hard to find and expensive for them. I think all of the Caulkins ones have met the iron man.

We just scrapped our Morris last week. It was a 49 footer. Longest we went between breakdowns was 25 hrs in the field. Too light for our heavy clay and sometimes rocky soils but did a good job. Just before we went no-till we bought a JD/Love rod weeder. Much better unit because it uses chisel plow shanks, 4"x4" frame, heavier rod, chains, boots and so on. Still have it just in case we decide to plow again.
