Trouble spots on a NH 638 round baler?

There is a NH 638 round baler coming up at a local auction this weekend that I am looking at. I'm just wondering if there any specific trouble spots to look for on these balers?

Thanks in advance, Josh

I run an older 630 but very similar machine....belts, bearings and chains etc. Only one gearbox.

Ours was well used when we got it and needed lots of TLC.

PTO shaft failed on this one, the CV joint on tractor end, replacement shaft is over 1K. I now just run a regular yoke end :-( So probably worth checking the condition on that when deciding on what to bid.

Run it on 42 PTO HP fine..but more power wouldn't hurt.

I think that was a smaller brother to my 644, which is a twine burner. It will tie almost as fast as having net wrap. Mine has well over thirty thousand bales through it, and still has the original belts on it. Check the drive chain sprockets are not worn out- chain lube has saved mine. And the pto is aNH special- it's 90 degrees out from most, so if it has to be replaced, go from the second cross all the way to the tractor. Other than that, it's been a great baler.

Thanks for the info. This one is a twine only as well, but for what I would use if for, it would be fine. I did see one metal plate by the sprockets that had a crack in it, but I didn't think it would be too hard to repair or replace.

I'll have to check on the pto, but I did see two
tractor halves of a pto shaft with it (one on the
pto and another tied to the pickup). Maybe the
previous owner already had a pto problem with it. If
I do manage to pick it up, I'll probably run it with
my JD 2520 (one of the older new generation
tractors, not the compact version) which is around
60 hp. Great to know I'll have plenty of power.

Thanks, Josh

Make sure they are 'in time'. That bsler probsbly has the same gearbox and pto setup as mine. I used the shaft off my manure spreader one time and it chattered pretty well, but got me finished as long as I didn't turn tight. But the yoke on the sliding section was out by 90 degrees. CNH wanted close to $200 for a new one, and mine was torn up pretty good. I wound up replacing it from the cross to the tractor with two new halves at a cost of about $140. CNH figures they are the only place to find parts.....
