Switching Knotters on a JD 14 T

Has anyone ever switched the knotters on a 14 T baler by unbolting the whole assembly , that is the frame that both sides are bolted down to. i have a junk baler that the Knotters are good. I am wondering if this may be easier than pulling the shaft that runs thru the knotter frames. Thanks

did it on my dad 30 or so years ago he bought the the whole assembly for 20$ we just switched them out a lot easer then taking it a part the putting it back together.

You can do it but you will still have to time the drive chains and adjust the needle to the "new" knotters.

So unless your old knotters are clear shot I would just fix what you have. Also you will not find a good complete knotter assemble very easy anymore. If the knotters are good then the baler is more than likely not going to be scrapped.

I have found a baler that sat out with hay in the chamber and has rotted out. The knotters look ok. Have you ever taken pulled the shaft that runs thru the knotter frames? How hard is it to do? I have a broken frame on the left hand side. Is it possiable to weld it back together while still on the shaft? Thanks for any info.

Did it on a 336(?) a long time ago. Shaft was broke. Beat the old one out with a lead hammer. Long job. Search out an arbor press. Count your washers, same in and out.

Make sure the needle carrier is not bent or warped.

Time by the book, make sure flywheel rotation is correct to take the slack out of the chains.

Check needle clearances by running through by hand.
