Hit-and Miss engines and buzz rig

I have a picture where my grandfather has a hit and miss engine set up to run a buzz saw. I realize, HP makes a difference, but from what I have seen these engines don't apear to be very efficient at turning a blade fast enough. Just curious.

You got to remember that the was the best they had at that time. I remember our first chainsaw. It weighed about 30 lbs. and the chain didn't turn all that fast but it sure beat a crosscut saw. Now I have a Husqvarna that weighs 12 lbs and melts through wood. Who'd a thunk? Can't imagine another 50 years.

My Grandfather had a set up like that also. I was always fascinated by the sound of the engine. I wasn't old enough to participate, but Dad and one or two of his brothers would help Grandad saw up his wood. About a year after Grandad died I was visiting my Grandmother and asked her about it. She said,"Oh so and so was hauling off some junk and I just let him take it too." Grrrrr.

In another 50 years, laser saws maybe?

The blades didn't need to turn fast to carry the rpms because those rigs had a flywheel on the shaft with the blade. Made for a very smooth running saw. My dad almost died when the flywheel on our old buzz saw split in half. He was tailing the saw and it hit him in the forehead. Had a plate in his skull for the rest of his life.
