848 round bailer

They bale... There's better balers out there tho. Make sure the chains are not worn out... and all of their related parts, idlers, etc. Chain is fairly expensive. Air bags can also leak and be somewhat expensive to replace. I'd tend to think most 848's today should be priced under 1500 in decent working order and less if they need work. If you're going to drop a pile of money on a baler you can just as well buy a lot newer belt baler like a 648 or something in that vein and have a better baler.

(quoted from post at 17:57:13 02/19/13) look'n to get my first round baler think'n bout 848 what do ya know about them

I got one. They are a ok baler, would like to upgrade to a belt baler but hard to justify. They do have a lot of moving parts. wish the bale was 5 foot tall. Any specific questions just ask.

I have one as my backup baler, and it works fine for that. Some years we bale several hundred bales with it, others only 75 or so. All depends on weather and if I have a second operator there to help or not. I wouldn't want to have it as my only machine for the 1,000+ bales I make each year, but in the event of a breakdown on my regular baler, or when rains are predicted and I can get a second operator, it works good and makes a nice, tight bale. Machine is in excellent shape, and I paid $1800 for it three years ago. No regrets on the purchase.

i make about 250 bales a year with mine. it had been used to death before i got it, but it keeps on going. the bales are easy to start, just need to be paying attention when the bales need to be tied. if you overfill it, a shear pin will break so you don't overstuff it. i'm happy with it for the round bales i make.

I like my 848. It doesn't take as much HP to run it, and in these hills it doesn't push you around as much as a bigger baler would. I wish it had gathering wheels on the pickup. In heavy hay it's hard to get the windrow narrow enough for the 4' pickup, at least with my primitive equipment. It's designed for the small time operator, and works good for what it's designed for.
