3 bottom plow for a 300 Utility

Looking at a 3 bottom fro my 300U. I know they were rated for a 3 bottom, and I am sure it would pull much easier a 2 bottom, but my question is - will it pull a 3 bottom well or will it be a stretch or fight to pull it?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Mostly depends on your soil; it would struggle with 2 in the gumbo that we farmed in the Red River Valley in ND.

It may pull 3 in lighter unsoded soils.....You would
be lots better off with a 2 bottom. In our area, even
a 400 would struggle with 3 bottoms.

Its been my experience that a 3 plow tractor will cover more ground and burn less fuel on a 2 bottom. I had a 504 which was suppose to be a solid 3 plow tractor. I struggled plowing the same 10 acres with a 3-16 mounted plow every year with it. Then one year I dropped the rear bottom. I found just what I stated to be true with that tractor. I have since traded for a 231 Massey and pull the same 2 bottom with that. I think it stronger than the 504 was but I've stuck with the two bottom. The rear bottom is still laying in the weeds.

Not sure where your at but I have a 2 bottom dick plow for sale here in Missouri. Funny thing is the fact it is sitting on the fast hitch of a 300U right now. It works well but is a bit rusty

It would depend apon the plow. My plow was a mounted I-H 3-16, don't know the model. I dropped the rear bottom along with the rear guide wheel on it. I was going to remount the guide wheel on the back of the two bottom but it seems to work OK without it.
You would just have to look at the plow and you should be able to see if it would work by dropping a bottom.

When I had my 300U, I had a 2 bottom Oliver, 3 pt rig that worked great. I plowed sod that hadn't been touched in 20 years, it rolled it all under.

Neighbors 300 just sits and spins with 2-14's. Does okay with 2 -10's till it hits the heavier clay.

It all depends on where you are.

You could buy a 3 bottom and try it. Reduce it to a 2 bottom if necessary. I had a 3 bottom and reduced it because the rear bottom got bent. I kept the wheel where it was so it looks kind of odd now but it plows very well. The wheel beeing further behind helps weighing down the plow.
