Anhydrous bar

I pull a rented 9 bar with 140 hp and a bigger tank. I have
pretty tough soils. I'd think an 11 might work for lighter soils.

Probably 15 to 20hp/shank---We pull a 16 knife with a JD 8760-rated at 300 hp. We run 8-9in deep at 5-5.5 mph. Good Luck!
 
I've pulled an 11 with 135 horses alright,but with it on the 3pt and a 4 wheel tank trying to come around on the headlands,I could have used a lot more weight on the front. I had my own 7 shank trailer type with a 500 gallon tank,didn't have any trouble pulling that one with 90.

round 12 h.p. per shank on average just deep enough to seal. If going deeper I'd think 15.
 
Erik, if this is your own bar and you have an option you might consider using the no-till mole knives. I have them on my bar and they pull easier and seal just as well as the regular mole knives with much less soil disturbance. You don't have to run them as deep to seal, either, at least in my heavy soils. Mike
 
Barely adequate... My Dad pulled a 5 shank in tilled ground, & no coulters with an IH 666. 56 DB HP, or about 11 HP / shank. Pull type, 500 gallon tank +/-. Ran about 4.75 - 5 MPH after wheel slip. Did OK up to about 8, or 10% slope. Any higher, & had to drop to T/A (Torque Amplifier) which reduced speed about 22% until making it to the top of the slope. I really prefer 13+ HP per shank, & 100+ gallon tank / row. (7 row, 700 gallon).
 
Size it like you would a chisel plow. We pull an 11 knife no till with up to 2000 gal. wagons with a JD 4755 MFWD in clay gently rolling to butt puckering hills. We used a 9 knife on the JD 4440 before we got the 4755.
