Re-decking Hay wagon bed

I am re-decking a 8X18 thrower bale wagon with 2*8 dimensional lumber –pine. What spacing between boards would be recommended?

we always used tongue and groove and never had any spacing at all. so I guess I would put them right tight together. just my opinion and probably wrong

If you are using treated lumber I would put them tight. They will dry and leave a 1/2 inch cap. If you are using kiln dried lumber I would space it 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch wide.

I know some leave a much wider spacing but they are harder to walk on. You can turn you angle on the.

I would NOT use tongue and groove (no offense)! We end up tearing that stuff off wagons. It doesn't drain water and it doesn't breathe. Always have mold if we hold the hay on them any length of time. I use 1" roughsawn ash or oak from a small local mill. No spacing as it shrinks as it dries. Good heavy stuff, tough as nails, you won't go sliding off trying to throw a bale cause it has good grip.

I used three 1/4 x 3 inch lag screws for spacers. I used 2x6 dimesional lumber, but ran a 1/4 round router bit down the sides of the top ot them for a finished look. Topped off with three coats of Uerethane varnish. Looked great for 6 months.

I space mine about an inch. The wide crack lets a lot more chaff fall through, and it is easier to clean out between the boards when i put the wagons away for the winter.

Agree a tongue & groove makes a nice wagon to walk-on. Just need to occasionally sweep it and generally keep it inside. We had one which lasted a long time. Always shedded it when loaded, but it spent a few weeks outside each summer and consequently got "washed" several times. Stored inside during the winter.

We space ours 1/2" so the chaff will go through. We had a neighbor that had solid floor wagons that were man killers trying to load straw behind the baler on hills.
