Blackhawk corn planter

My Great Uncle had a three point lift BlackHawk corn planter. He planted two 30 rows with it. He usually only have 25 acres of corn and maybe that much in soybeans but that sure would have seemed slow when planting.

My question is about some history of that brand of planter. I am trying to get it bought back from the fellow that bought it at my uncle's sale.

My Uncle's was not the only one that was around here. Several other guys had them. I am sure this one was a factory three point lift one. I know that BlackHawk made horse drawn planters as well.

I remember an old 2 row horse drawn planter that Dad put a tractor tongue in. I had to ride it to raise and lower it and lift and lower the row giudes. I may be remembering it wrong, but remember it as being a JD BlackHawk. Did a good job for that day and time.

I had a two row horse drawn Blackhawk converted to three point. I think Blackhawk was in some way related to the Cockshutt company. I still have one of the plates in my collection. The plates were just a ring about the size of a JD plate but had the center all open.

Would you like a copy of the operators manual for that planter? If so I will make a copy and send it to you snail mail. That is assuming it is the ground drive model. It will take me a while to find by manual. A friend has 2 and I know where anouther is in the junk pile. Last summer I rebuilt the tractor drawn 2 row pull type and boy what a job, was not about to tackle the horse drawn one as for what I could get for my time I had too much other machinery to get ready for operation. Those 2 plus one other are avaible for sale now yet by the dealer I rebuild machinery for. Then there was the PTO powered model that was made for the 9N Ford and it kept running with the planter raised unless yoy thru the PTO out of gear to turn on the ends. Later they made a different PTO adapter that would dissengage the planter operation when raised. The friend that has those 2 and both slightly different also has a PTO powered unit on a 540 Cockshutt tractor and he has both the 2 & 4 row later versions from Cockshutt. The first Blackhawk 4 row were a pair of 2 rows with a special hitch to pull them. But I thinl you might be mistaken on being 30" rows as they only set down to 38" and up to 44" rows. The one I did redo he wanted it set to 30" but not possible and I got it to the 38" that is the narrowest. The friend has the book for the PTO powered planter. They were made at Belleview Ohio

They were somehow related to Cockshutt company, but I don't remember how(will ask dad today). I have never seen a 3 point Blackhawk, if you get it post a pic it would be nice to see. Dad has one of the 2 row pull type planters and a few other implements along with some E-3 and E-4 tractors that he plays with yet.

reason I bought it was because of the name.

Read up on Chief Blackhawk, he was a famous Indian warrior and Chief

I understand he was one of the first Indians that lead his people to fight back against the white man as they tried to take his land.

He was a great Chief and leader of his people, again I bought the old sheller because it has his name on it.

I to will fight as he did, if the man tries to take my land and the way its going i may have to.

I have some information on the Black Hawk. They were part of Ohio Cultivator Company out of Bellevue Ohio. Send me a snail mail address and I will make you a copy. They were very popular planter in this area.

Leroy: You are not too far from me either since you said you were within 30 miles of Kalida or Delephos.That distance works for me as well. I have a Black Hawk planter Test Stand. How can I contact you snail mail wise as well. I would like a copy of the operators manual as well. I also may need a couple of parts. Thanks. J

Our first planter was a two row Blackhawk set for 36" rows. Planter was purchased from a Cockshutt dealer in Hagersville Ont.got it cheaper because we set it up ourselves. We are about 30 miles from Brantford Ont. home of Cockshutt

I"ve attached a couple of pictures of the 2-Row Blackhawk corn planters that I"ve found over the years. I believe that using both, I can make one that works!
I also have a few plates but they are hard to find in my area (third picture; bottom group).
My Dad used a 4-Row, pull type Blackhawk corn planter for years.

John, we have met before. Do you remember about talking with the Fisher boys a few year ago about putting on a Perkins engine seminar at the Buckeye show. I was with Ron at the VanWert show when he was talking to you about it. My address is Lester Helmlinger, 10622 Ashburn Rd., Wapakoneta, Oh. 45895. I either do not have the capablities for emailing things like that or if I do have then I have no idea how to do it, That is why I have to get copies made and mail them out. You know Dick Alexander, his wife is a cousin of mine and at one time I know he had a part of the test stand. As for parts I do not know where to get any, what I needed for that planter I made my own. It will be a while before I get a chance to hunt for the book. I think you are up close to Toledo. My hearing is to the point that I cannot reaonably use a telephone anymore so do not give out a number.
