Auxiliary Spring - JD 953 Running Gear

Just looking for some information on these. Where they good or bad? Reading about them in the operator's manual and say's they improve tipping by 100%.

Does anybody have any, or seen them, or used them? Or where they pretty uncommon? In the part's breakdown it say's they were introduced 1954 on.

I have several 953 and 963's, there's not much difference in them. I like'em. they seem to never wear out. I have one I got from the original owner. I have the invoice where he bought it, Nov. 1950. They started making them in the late 40's. My uncle bought one in 1948. No matter how old they are you can pull them 60 mph with a truck. The newer wagons, 1065 and 1075, are a little wider and maybe more stable. but I have no trouble with the old ones.
 
I'm sorry, I missed the point of your post. I have bought some wagons with those springs on them and i took all of them off. I couldn't keep a load of hay on.

Mike, that's alright! I liked your first post too...from everything I have heard they are great wagons. I bought one this summer and am going to restore it, use it in my sister's wedding. I am painting the wheels now. Going to get to bearings next, and go from there and start painting the frame.

But seen these springs and I am going to put a wagon on it for people and pull it. So thought maybe these springs would help the ride some or the leaning. My wagon is not the spring bolster type, but the solid type (the kind I wanted). The manual says there is tension on the springs both ways, and assist leaning. I thought maybe it would give them a better ride (cushion) and help leaning. But it shouldn't be a problem without them either. So did you keep the springs or get rid of them? And do you mind me asking how much that wagon was new on the invoice? A couple hundred dollars?
 
Those are only used with the rocking bolster. I would take the rocking bolster off. They where a terrible idea that may have worked on perfectly flat ground but just made for upset wagons every where else.

If you do not want to loose the height the rocking bolster gives you then just make some steel stops and weld them in to make it solid. I would not dare have a wagon with a walking bolster on it and haul people on it. If they all would get to one side it would tip over.
 
JDSeller, mine is the non spring bolster type wagon, it's the fixed type. So no worries for leaning with it.

Sounds like the springs or the rocking bolster didn't work out to well, so that's good to know. Just thought those springs were neat and maybe added function but doesn't sound that way! Thanks!
 
I am not a jd person but my dad bought the 963 wagons new never a better wagon made, like they say will travel at 55 mph all day and never sway now the 1065s are a piece of junk.
