Old Style Side Delivery Rakes

I am picking up a tractor this week at a farm that has two old style side delivery rakes. I have a picture that may or may not have uploaded... if it didn't I'll try again.

It's painted JD green, like everything else on the farm, so paint doesn't mean anything. The other rake shows a little AC orange.

Does it look familiar to anyone? Identifying signs for a manufacturer? Where would a model tag (if one exists) hide on a rake this?

Here I am again in a situation where there's something old and I don't have a good excuse to buy it. If someone can give one good reason...!

By the way, they are for sale, so if someone has been looking for one, let me know and I can put you in the right place to own one. The owner was talking about scrap: I sure don't want to see that happen!

Ben, It's definitely a New Idea. My dad bought a new one just like it in the 50's. I still have it. They were originally painted green with a some orange parts. I might still have the original owners manual. Al

No. 4 New Idea built 1948 to 1953 when was followed by the No. 44 that was the same except fot tractor levers on the toung. Those are highly desireable rakes for use in Amish areas now yet. I have 4 of them setting here right now for rebuilding plus 2 of the 3 bar that preceded them. AC rakes were all PTO powered and on rubber. That Orange could be Coop that looks very much like the New Idea. Would like to have that rake but think your a bit too far to go for me. Northwest Ohio. If there is still a tag on it look on the front of the angle that the tooth tilt lever sets on. It is held on by 2 rivets and most tags have gotten lost. If it is still there it will have a lot number on that starts with R and 3 didjets and that will tell the year it was made and if more than one lot was made what part of year it was made. It was built at Coldwater, Ohio.

Iron seat? I don't believe these two had iron seats; I think they were always tractor drawn.

If you are curious about the dump rake, it is a fence row special. Something to chuck onto a trailer load if you are picking something else up, but not much more.

I don't even have a picture... it was that sad looking!

Thanks to everyone for their responses. I'll check for data plates and report back.

Al---Looks like your rake in the pic is a 3-bar rake, and I assume it's a NI. I have a 4-bar NI that I tore apart several years with the idea of refurbishing it. That never happened, but now I'd like to be able to reassemble it, but I don't know where to start. Could you send me some good pics of your rake so that I'd have an idea how it goes together? Thanks---Martin

Martin, No it is a 4-bar New Idea rake. Probably a "4A" like a previous poster suggested. I don't have immediate access to it to take more pictures as it is on my hobby farm 10 miles from my house. If I get out to the farm in a couple of days, I will take a few pictures for you. Might also see if I can locate the users manual. Temp here in NE Wis. is now -1. Al

No. 4, not 4A as they never used a number like that, The 3 bar did not carry a model number.

rabbit, I wonder if your Uncle's rake was a converted horse drawn unit?

I'm sure the memories of riding that thing around a hot field in summertime would be still strong... maybe more than you'd want them to be, right?

I have a 3 bar new idea rake. This is my dads which his dad bought new. I began rebuilding it and thought I had made sure everything was fixable. I now have a sandblasted and painted frame and the reel head needs to be replaced and wondering if you know where I can find one. I really hate to scrap this at this point. Any help would be very much appreciated.
