I'm looking for a International 2-16 or a 3-14 3pth plow to put behind my Farmall 504 this spring and i'm having no luck finding IH. However there does seems to be Massey Ferguson plows available near my area of Vermont. I know nothing about MF plows. Were they good plows? Can replacement parts still be readily found? Are there any models that any of you guys would recommend, and the average going price for them?

Thank you for any help.

Jason

Any that you find with trip bottoms and 4 bolt shares should be fine. As far as I know, all the 4 bolt share ones are use the same wear iron as the 880.

They'd be as good as anything else of that vintage today... Wear parts are getting hard to find for a lot of plows today.
If you're worried about parts obsolence you might be better off buying something modern like a Kverneland model AB or at least something with a #8 bottom as that's still one of their production models.

We've got an on-land MF 7-16 model 880 and I believe the 4-16 3pt model is a MF model 43. I've also have a 5-16 White 548, 4-14 JD 145A and a 5-14 JD 66H. The MF's work fine but the White which is just a repainted Oliver I like better. Really desire a White 588 or an IH 720. The JD's are for show. If primarily for show, I would seriously try and match plow and tractor manufacturer. If primary intention is to use, go with the readily available MF. I would guess a good MF 3pt plow would be less than $300. IH 720's and to a lesser extent the White 588 bring a lot more dollars.

Areund here if you were to ask for parts for a Kverneland you mijght as well be asking for something for a 1913 What-is-it horse drawn plow and you would have better luck. In my 69 years on the farm have never seen one of those Kverneland and this was plow country, Because asfar as I understand from this board they were a eaurepean built plow and with you in Canada you may have gotten machinery not sold here in this part of the states. Here if you would find one of those plows run, not walk away as fast as you can. They may be good but it would be like bringing a dead horse back to life, not possible, to get any information on them let alone parts.

You might want to look at the bigger picture.... Kverneland IS a relevant manufacturer of plows today, not just a company who built them in 1911. These plows are still in use where plowing is still done.... and generally regarded as about the best in the world.
Given that Kubota has acquired them in the past year or so I'd expect parts will be fairly available through that network in a reasonable period of time. They may not be parts that will be on a dealer shelf but they will be in a warehouse somewhere on the continent. That will make them available vs something that's been discontinued because nobody has used it in 20 years.
Getting parts for all of the old stubble plows like MF, Ford, David Brown, IH, etc is getting very difficult around here.

I've rebuilt a couple Massey plows in the past 3 years. (#66, 2X14", CAT I and a #74, 3X16", CAT II) I was able to get ALL the wear parts through Massey Ferguson dealer. (Landslides, shins, shares, moldboards, coverboards.) Cost was about $145 per bottom, but OEM parts fit well and wear better than most cheap aftermarket parts.

Depending on where you're at, Kvernaland plows (and parts are virtually nonexistant. Everything here in my area is no till now. A few tobacco growers still plow, but most have gone to rototillers. The dealers are still vaguely familiar with older plows, but no one buys new plows here, and Kvernaland is "new" to the central US.

And if there never were any dealers in this area of the states and no one knows what you are talking about where do you go to get the parts. Stick to a brand that had dealers and sold them. That was not here. Like I said canada may have been different.

I consider my area "plow country". there is still quite a lot of plowing. I can get about any part for John Deere, IH, Massey or Oliver plows, But I have never seen or heard of a Kvernland. I doubt you could get anything around here for them.

What part of Ky are you from? I'm southeast of Louisville, closer to Bardstown. Very little plowing at all here anymore, mostly no till 'cept for tobacco ground.

You should note... his post said Vermont, not the plains of Kansas. There is very likely to have been a Kverneland distributor in the area... as I'm sure the plow is still used a fair bit there. It is used a LOT in Quebec, directly north by a couple of hours and used in abundance to the east. The primary reason being that anyone who still plows wants a plow with automatic resets and probably variable width bottoms. The fact that a couple of you point out that nobody plows anymore because they're using no-till suggests that you're out of the loop on this one.

The way I look at it, if he can find a Kverneland plow in his area, reasonably priced for what he needs... that's what he should buy. If he can't find one... it's all moot.
Parts availability would be of no consequence to me. One call to a Kubota dealer will probably find the parts. If not track down who the nearest distributor is... and have the parts courioured from a dealer. If you're stuck... Molboro parts are readily available. Again, these plows are still actively produced in some numbers; parts are readily available in their network. The same is not so likely to be said for most of the former US manufacturers of plows. They'll have parts as long as there's sufficient turnover to justify stocking them at the warehouse level. After that... inventory will be bled out... and good luck to you. I never had any trouble getting parts for my old David Brown plows until the day came that they wern't available anymore. That wasn't a big space of time either.

I don't see anything wrong with going and buying the MF plow he asked about... but to me, given all probability........ Kverneland parts will be available long after the MF plow is gone to the chinaman's furnace. Not to mention that for most sod type work the european plows are far superiour anyway. There's a reason they persevered over the others.

As far as calling a Kubota dealer to get them, forget it, they will drop the line before starting to mess with the ag parts. This is Ohio

Yes there are Kverneland plows around here. I have never used one, Hear they are great. But they aint cheep! Could buy a used plow and replace the bottoms several times for the cost of a used kverneland here. There is a Kabota dealer not far from me though. And Moldboard plowing is still very common here.

If you're plowing any amount, particularly in rocky ground... you'd pay just about any amount of money for auto resets after having dealt with a rigid plow.

So... go up the line and tell them that the dealer dropped the line on you.
That's just idiotic. Any dealer that passes up a sale, particularly a sale on special order parts is stunned.
I don't know where they are at integrating their sales and parts networks at this point but I'd assume that was the main focus from the beginning.
