JD 810 3/16 plow

I'm looking at a 810 3/16 that doesn't have the tail wheel I'm planning on using this with a JD 620. What is the purpose for the tail wheel?

Its called a ROLLING LAND SIDE. Tends to steer the rear of the plow, also effects DEPTH and LATERAL sway.Nearly every mounted plow was provided one, with a few exceptions.

Every JD 810 or similar plow I have seen had a tail wheel. I would suspect someone removed it. Don't think it would be hard to find a tail wheel for it. Possibly someone converted a 4 bottom to a 3 bottom and didn't move the wheel. I converted mine from 4-14 to 3-14. But you could try using it without it. Al

RMOMN,

JD used these tail wheels to hold the rear of the plow up vertically and laterally to balance moldboard / furrow slice pressures. If you would intend on using one without a tail wheel keeping the plow pulling straight might be a real challenge. Later models of JD and other make plows that did not have a tail wheel utilized an extra long landside to alleviate the furrow slice 'pulling crooked' problem.
You should be able to procrure a tail wheel from any newer style JD integral plow such as F110/ F120/ F115/ F125 that would bolt up to your plow just fine.
One side note, JD used a 4.00x8 solid rubber wheel on the early 810 series plows whereas the later used either a 21" diameter stamped steeel wheel like the other guy posted or a 4.00x12" pneumatic rubber tire.

Without the tail wheel, you will need to extend the rear Landslide and add an adjustable "HEEL".

Using a Gauge Wheel could control depth fairly well, but you need the extended Landslide, if you do not get the rear wheel assembly..

The plow does have a gauge wheel and a 801 hitch I believe is what he called it. This plow was used behind a JD 60. Would I still need the trail wheel?

Rmomn, If it was me, I would 1st try to locate a rear wheel before I purchased it. In my opinion, these plows don't work all well with an 801 hitch. But maybe with a real 3-point hitch, like on a 620, they might work better. I hardly used mine on the 70 and found a trailing 3 bottom 55 or 555 works much better. In my red clay land you could not pull a 3-16 with a 60 or 620. My 555 3-16 makes my 830 work in packed corn land. Al
