Tire sizes and rims

Tire sizes and rim sizes are two different things. It sounds like you are talking about tire sizes.
 
Another answer would be,"How wide are the rims"?Measure them.Then you know the facts.Someone could have replaced 18.4s with 20.8s.Seen it done...JD is right,20" rims are too wide for 18.4 tires.Measure your rims.
 

Pullers routinely put tires on oversized rims. but that is for strictly straight line use. curves and corners and side hills could present difficulties.
 
Using old size markings....ie, pre decimal- it is common to go an inch wider or narrower than rim width. Beyond that inch, they look funny and act funny. ok, decades ago there were some 7.5, etc, rim width, not bulge of the tire like the new size markings are.
 
If you have 18" rims you can put 18.4's on there just fine. I have a set of duals on a tractor that are set up like this and there is no problem whatsoever. However, if they are wider then they will not work well in the field. On the track, yes. But not in the field. Mike
 
J-- I Spent 22+ years in the farm tire business, It has been done many times, especially if they are trying to get down 30" rows. The 18.4's fit on a 16" rim and 20.8x38's go on 18" rims. We had 1 man go to 20" rows on beans and decided he wanted to cultivate. We put 15.5x38's on those 18" rims, worked, but as soon as the correct width rims were available, that fall, we got him some and mounted the 15.5x38's on them.
 
I have had 18.4s on rim for 20.8s for 20 years on my 4 wheeler all 8 of them and had no problems. In fact I am on my second set of 18.4 radials.
