Want very little investment, dont mind working on equipment. Would like to stay JD but dont have to. Just hook up the pto, 2 sets of remotes and go to the field. Only reason I went away from it was to gain capacity, for up to 500 bales a year it was a great baler. [Reply]  [No Email]

I thought I wanted a 4x5 (4' wide x 5' diameter) but couldn't find one. I did find a 5x4 (5' wide x 4' diameter) that I purchased in great shape considering the age and price was right......basically a downsized (reduced diameter) bale that one could roll with a 5XX series JD baler choked down from 6' to 4'. I have some 4x6 bales that I bought (before I decided to bale my own again) and some 5x4's that I baled. My best guess is that my bales weigh in at about 800 and the 4x6's more like 1200. The grasses are different; mine is Bahia and Pearl Millet and the purchased is rye. The purchased hay lasts about twice as long in the hay hoop as the grown, but I think it is due to the fact that they won't get off it like they will the purchased. The purchased is net wrapped and mine twine so it seems to weather better for long term storage. Even though the net is a superior wrap for down here, I am familiar with the twine and the price is right. For the big boys, go for it! My hay patch is pretty level so I don't have terrain to contend with. My baler is the JD 375 and is totally manual; everything is visible on the front of the baler and you manually activate the tie function and make the tie. My last, previous baler was a JD 530 making the 5x6 rolls and was automatic with a monitor in the cab and an automatic tieing system. Being 30 or so years old, age took it's toll and the tieing function was unreliable even though I went to a lot of trouble to fix/get it fixed. Personally, I like having control of everything myself. Nothing to get out of adjustment or break which saves me money, frustration, and time. Being retired and a small operator, I don't need to be fixing things and spending money if I don't have to. One benefit of the smaller diameter roll is that it is easily carried on the FEL on the smaller tractor (than I had with the 530 baler) and seeing around it isn't the problem it was when I baled 5x6's. Other thing I think is the size baler I bought has a niche buyer's market and not many folks are looking for them. I bought mine from Southwest Auction Co., Inc. in Howe, TX. and there were 2 on the lot. There were several newer JD 5XX balers but no 4XX which bale the 4x roll I originally wanted. I did enjoy a round of haggling on the price which I enjoy when making a major purchase of farm equipment. So, that's my story. Hope it helps, Mark [Reply]  [No Email]

Although the hyd auto tie on the 30 series JD rd balers are a little complicated they aren't that difficult to get to operate correctly. [Reply]  [No Email]

I thought I was getting out of the business when I retired 8 years ago, so I sold off all of my stuff at the usual buy high sell cheap senario. My wife of 48 years died and I decided I didn't want to live alone. I found this dazzling country bumpkin, fantastic lady of my age and we co-habitated and as a result I got back into the business. She wanted cows, which she cares for, and I needed to feed them. Being retired, I downsized, but still needed basic implements. So that is where I am today and the basis for my current vanacular. I know 65hp doesn't even know it is there. Paid $1800 for it and it is in very nice shape. Makes a 4x5 bale. You shouldn't have to pay a fortune to find a machine that will work well for you. I'd guess between 4.5-5 ft in diameter. With a 430 or 435 you'd get the luxury of a bale monitor with automatic twine wrapping that a 375 won't have. [Reply]  [No Email]
tomstractorsandtoys1 01-05-2013 09:15:46 64.136.27.164 Report to Moderator	Re: Round bailer recommended for jd 2020 54 hp in reply to Young7117, 01-05-2013 08:22:32   We have a Deere 335 that makes a 4X4 bale and often use it on a 2510 which has the same engine as your 2020.We have used it on our 2040(3 cyc. 40 hp)and it worked ok.We have baled thousands of bales with almost no problems.We have replaced pickup teeth three times and drive chains twice.Cornstalks are very hard on pickups.We still have the original belts but they are completly shot.We bought it new in 1996 at a discount because the 446 balers were introduced to replace the 335. Ours has electic twine so we only need a single outlet hyd system. I would wish for the double twine arm to make it tie faster.We have baled 500-800 hi moisture bales with it and it works ok for that,but you need to be careful that it does not wrap on the drive rolls.Deere made a hi moisture kit with scrappers and we now have one to put on when we replace the belts.I have no complaints about the baler and would only wish for net wrap and the wider pickup which are not options for the 4X4 baler.For us the smaller bale size is great as they are easy to handle and haul.We sell some hay and two bales fit in the back of a pickup and one person can roll them off if need be. I understand some are hydr tie, some are electric so depends on your tractor and number of remotes. We have a NH 630, makes 4x4 bale, the 630/634/638 etc will all run easily on your tractor. Other 4x4 balers, Hesston 540/Massey 1744/CIH 8430 All the same machine but different paint/decals. New Idea 483/CIH 3440 All of the above can be bought usable for 4 to8k depending on condition.
