John Deere Sickle Bar Mower

I have a John Deere sickle bar mower currently attached to a 1959 John Deere model A. I believe the mower is a #5 or a #8 but I don't know for sure. How can I identify the model of this mower?

No sure how you would know if there is not a tag still on it other then maybe with a picture. I rebuild a JD-#9 this last spring and have it on a D-17

If I remember on the #9 it is in the area of where the PTO shaft goes to the bearing housing area. I'll be out there in the near future and try to look to be sure

On the #9 the tag is as your standing behind it straight back from the PTO shaft as it goes into the gear box. The #9 is a 3 point sickle mower with a pitman drive for the bar.

Easiest was is to look at the upper cover on the housing.

The photo below shows the upper cover for the #5 mower.

Hope this helps.

My sickle bar mower is a #5 based on the fact it has an angle frame and the shape of the gear housing. I am looking forward to getting it restored and cutting a little hay with it. Thanks for all of the valuable input.
