Hey All,
I currently have a John Deere 400 15 footer. This next year, I wouldn't mind finding a 22-23 foot model to make a pass and a half while hoeing. I have noticed the 400 hates any amount of trash. I plow and this isn't much of an issue. Is the 400 about the best out there, or does someone make a better one?
On a side note, I have a later model that has a black-background leaping deer on the logo. I bought one with a yellow-background leaping deer and like it much less. Either the older one is worn out, or Deere started putting much more aggressive spoons on later hoes. |

Yetter still builds them. Deere used to sell parts to stagger the wheels on each shank but I don't know if they're still available.

Believe the CIH (model 181?) had staggered wheels which helps with trash which I was tempted to purchase rather than the JD 415 setting in the shed. The CIHs were a lot more money. I think the old M&W was similar. Believe Yetter is the best choice today and I'm not sure they still make them.

You might try one with the wheels staggered. I can't say as to whether it would help or not as we have a Hiniker with the wheels all together. Since we started no-tilling everything we haven't used it either.

To my knowledge JD has used the same wheel for years. I would say your old one is worn some and not as aggressive. As far as trash they all will plug up with much trash. The wheels just stick it and carry it around the wheel. A rotary hoe is not a high residue tool.

I agree with JD here. My old 400 I bought from Dad years ago has been a good hoe. I haven't tried anything else though. I don't use it allot but I did this spring due to the wind and rain crust.

I can t tell you what models Yetter still makes but I know a phone call will tell you the answer. I know they still build hoes, they were loading a flat bed two weeks ago when I was there.
