New Holland 852 baler

Hello,
Can anybody tell me anything about a New Holland 852 round baler. There is one close to me for sale with a new chain and new paint, looks nice but dont know anything about them. I would use it to bale 6 acres grass/alfalfa mix and maybe a few rounds of straw and a few rounds of corn stalks. Says it has auto tie and works good. What size of bale would it make? can you make smaller diameter bales or just one set size.
Thanks
Shawn

Actually, I would like to find an older smaller 4x4 baler. Any suggestion on what brand and model to look for. Need to be reasonably cheap, or inexpenisve. Net wrap is not neccisary.
Thanks
Shawn

I used to run a 852 and they are good balers. They probably kick out a 1200 to 1500 pound bale. You can get smaller ones if you want but you'd have to get out and manually trip the auto tie. Check out the floor chains and the floor plates for wear and just basically the common sense stuff.

For alfalfa or alfalfa mixed hay I would look for a belt baler. The chain/bar balers beat a lot of the leaves off the hay as they baled.

I have had pretty good luck with the Vermeer 504 balers. I think they where open throat after the "F" series. They will be some one here that can tell you for sure. They would be fairly reasonable in price and parts are readily available.

A JD 435 baler would work too but they would be a little higher in price and the tie setup is a little more complicated if your not familiar with them.

New Idea made a 484 that was 4x4 they were also sold as a CaseIH as well. They are a simple baler that you only need a small tractor for.The first ones were orange then gray and I think they made the last ones red.We have a Deere 335 that has been a good baler and will make a tighter bale than the New Idea, almost to tight if the hay is a little damp(you can end up with some mold). The looser New Idea bales breathe better but do not shed water as well if left outside.

Jd is correct, an F series and later Vermeer is an open throat baler and a good simple baler. I ran a 504 F with hydraulic tie for several years, 2 hydraulic remotes, and 40hp and your good to go. They are a much better baler than the NH and one can be had in the 2500-3000 range.
