John Deere Model R Manure Spreader

I have a John Deere model R manure spreader. The last two times out the chains have not been feeding manure to the beaters. I had to empty it today with a manure fork. After I emptied it I engaged the chains and they moved and emptied the remaining manure. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Should be a slip clutch somewhere between the pto shaft and the gear box, depending on how old the spreader is. Could need cleaned and tightened up. Don't know how old yours is or what it looks like. I had to fix one on an old Knight spreader last week, it was rusted up and wouldn't work.

Sounds like a problem with the sprocket on the right side that makes the chain index. Maybe the drive pawl is not engaging.

This is NOT a PTO spreader, ground drive only and it sounds like one of the 2 springs may have broken, only one will hold the pawl in without a load but with a load it takes both, that or the notches on the drive wheel are worn to where the pawl cannot get enough of a grip. The R is a 95 bu. full ground drive, the Model N built at same time is a PTO powered unit of about 125? bu. size and they were built in the 50's.

Could it be that some manure has fallen onto the ratchet gear---then frozen, so that the pawls cannot get into the ratchet-gear "teeth" as they should?
