Bean puller

A neighbor and I were out today picking up a combine and in the course of conversation he said that he saw a bean puller up by Moorhead that was a rotating bar that ran on the ground and pulled out the beans.

Does anyone know anything about these or have a picture of one ?

Thanks

Greg

I had what was called an IH hayloader in our part of the country. The owner's manual called it a Green Vegetable Loader. At the rear was a pick up reel that looked similar to a side delivery rake. The bars had curved teeth that picked up the windrow and brought it up on the back side. As the windrow came over the top, a cam device would retract the teeth and deposit the windrow onto a slat and cable apron. The apron would then load the window onto the hay wagon.

What you had would only work after the crop was mowed to take the grean crop in to make silage. It would not remove any plants from the ground. They were just made heavier than the normal hay loader to stand up to the extra weight of the green verse the dry hay.

I have never grown field beans but lots are grown near me.All the pullers around here seem to be rotating rod type instead of blades.I believe Pickett is the manufacturer.

Ah the memories! Dad used a bean puller on the red kidney beans that he grew. He used the knife type that bolted onto his mounted 2 row JD cultivator frame. The knives were about four feet long and ran just beneath the surface of the soil to slice the roots off and then lifted the plants a few inches out of the ground and into a windrow. We would let them dry down in the sun for a few days before using a pickup head on the harvester to thresh them. The theory behind the puller was to get all the pods into the combine. Direct cutting them with a wheat header would leave a lot of the low pods on the ground. I have seen the rod type pullers at farm shows but never used one.
