Stihl O31AV Chainsaw

Thos of You that Use Chainsaws "ALOT"... What kind of Reputation did the Stihl Chainsaw have,Any Significant problems? anything You can Elaborate on?? Thanks, Larry KF4LKU

Bought an 031AV in about 1973, as near as I can recollect. Still starts on the second pull, does everything its supposed to. If you have trouble with it not running right until warmed up, check the fuel pickup hose in the fuel tank. They do deteriorate over time. That's the only problem I ever had with it.

I have an O11AV & a Farm Boss. Best & only saws I've ever owned. Keep them clean, tight & the seals & fuel lines up to date & you shouldn't really have too many problems. Clean fuel mix is a must, too.

No matter what you have for a chainsaw buy gas without alcohol in it if possible. It is available at some airports. I drive 30 miles one way to buy it. The ethyl alcohol is murder on 2 cycle engines. I know a lot will disagree with me (especially if they grow corn) but my Husqvarna dealer told me he ha saws come in every day with scored cylinders because of the junk gas we are forced to buy. IMHO

I bought a used 031AV and used it for 27 years, finally had some problem with the recoil starter and traded it in to dealer, cost for 27 years was $125.

Stihls of that era are good, solid saws. They run significantly heavier than the newer models and the AV and ergonomics aren't the same. Parts can be harder to get.

I just got a bar and chain for an 041 a guy gave me yesterday. Heavy or not, they still work good.

When the 030, and the 031 that followed were current - they were one of the fastest running saws Stihl sold. Also one of the most reliable. The bigger 040 and 041 ran slower and had more problems.

For the homeowner, farmer, and firewood cutter - the 020, 030/031, and 040/041s were our best sellers.

The only common problem the 031s had was the ignition condensor. Often died early and had to be soldered in.

041 was prone to many other "nuisance" problems. Impulse hoses breaking, intake manifold gaskets getting sucked in, and oil-pumps leaking into the crankcase.

Back in the days of the 030 and 031, just about any saw Stihl sold with an upright cylinder was fast (030,031,045,075, etc.) -and the ones with horizontal cylinders slower (040, 041, 041G, 050, 051, etc.)

The O8S was an exception with a upright cylinder but very slow cut speed. That's because it had a governor on it.

It's funny you say the 041 was prone to problems LJD. I was wrenching on saws back when they were new and we mostly had simple carb issues, filters, stuff like that. My impression was and still is that they were a nice solid saw with low breakdown issues. Of course, I was seeing Huskies like 50-1 compared to Stihl since we were a Husky shop. That's probably mostly why I didn't see a lot of bad ones.

I also have an 034 I bougt it new in 1996, other than chains and an air filter it hasn't needed anything, not even a bar. I just don't like the on/off switch, seems like I accidentally hit it and shut the saw off,!

Stihl bored the 041AV over sized & called it the 041AV Super & you couldn't keep that saw together! It shook itself apart every day. All I ever ended up for spare parts before 6 months were up.
