I just bought a really old IH Corn planter, with the big 18"+ wheels in the back and a seat to sit on it.
Its in really good shape for its age, little rust, etc.
My problem is that the row markers are missing.
Does anyone know how I can make some or what they should look like?
And how do I set them up when planting?

| What are you going to plant? Where? for what reason?
You don't need marker for a two row planter. Just use tire tracks.

| i bought a couple markers of a scrap guy a couple years ago that still look blue on the disk. i have since found out they go on a horse planter. i do not have a horse planter and these would be for sale.270-670-2499

| I have a parts planter like that and a double hitch to hook 2 of those planters together to make a 4 row tractor planter. Its a factory McCormick hitch. Its for sale too.

| The markers for use with the 2 planter hitch would be on the hitch and not the planter and they would be the length for 4 rows and not 2.

well I beg to differ. If it wasnt dark out and blizzarding out I would go take pictures of the planter and the hitch. The 1 marker is definatly on the planter it is mounted to the end of the planter and the other is laying there off the other planter which is missing.

| Need to find my book that might show that planter. On Deere and Cockshutt they are as I said as far as I know. I would think the weight of the long marker would want to lift the inside wheel on either unit. Just hauled a 2 row unit a couple of months ago but missing one marker., Found anouther with the hand lift that the person that bought the one I hauled was hoping it would have.

| It has the row markers although they would be too long but it would be easy to shorten them. The markers are for sale as is the whole thing. I can get pictures in a day or 2 when it stops snowing as it it at a different farm site

| I plant with a old steel wheel IH two row planter with markers. I just use the tractor wheels for markers most of the time though. I think its easier for me anyway.

| I'm not sure if it will work, but here is a link to the craigslist ad that it was on.
Everything works I dont see why if it is a checkrow planter that I couldn't use it...

| The link doesnt work...With a 'checkrow',you will need a speacial knotted wire(the length of your field) to trip it to make it drop seeds in to hills(42" apart).I supposed if someone rode the planter they could trip it manually...

| That is a drill version of the check planter as it never had the check heads on it. Am not sure of model number. It was a hand lift unit that was converted to a 3 point and then without taking the 3 point off they put a tractor toung hitch on it and it is now set up to operate from the drawbar of a tractor with the seat set clear to the back, not like the tractor the 3 point was put on for. I know a parts planter byt do not know if it has markers.

| If you have a seat then you have a horse drawn planter but I have never seen one with that small of wheels on it and 18" is a small wheel, normal wheel is about 33" in diameter and having a seat unless it is a lister or bedder planter and those could have an 18" wheel as they were never in the area around Ohio the chances are 99.9% that it is a check row planter. May be some around if a normal shoe planter. Your description does not match any standard type of McCormick corn planter and I work with people that still use them behind the horses.

| Once you can try to get a picture posted and give us a location so we can figure out the type of croping system that was used there, flat land, planting in borrom of furrow in arid locations for water conservation or planting on top of ridges for either flood irigation or to ceep the plants up out of standing water. That all can help identify the type of planter and once identified then can come up with possible parts for it.

| you dont need markers on a 2 row.just line up the tirew with the last tire track.Or hang a 2x4 across thefront of the tractor and let a chain dangle over the last row planted. the thing to do is to not concentrate on the last row(that will only cause crooked rows),'Eyeball" the other end of the field ane drive toward that.Dont worry if the 'guessrow is a little 'off'.With a little practice you will be straight as a 'fiddle string'.

| One more thing.A planter as old as your's could be a 'checkrow' planter.If so,its a yard ornament.Find out for sure.post a pic,please.
