two way plow

i have seen a few john deere 2 way plows at a couple of auctions. i dont know much about them. seems like that would be alot of weight on the rear of the tractor is it hard to keep the front end down? also wouldn't you need a much bigger tractor to pull the plow like a 3-16 or 4-16 two way plow what kind of hp would you need to pull one? way out of my price range but it seems handy.

I pull a 4x16 with a 1256(125hp) in heavy irrigated ground. We figure 25-30 hp per bottom. You will need frontend wts.

Nice equipment!!
I like the idea but I can't justify that in my operation yet I'm still considered a hobby farm but some day!

Delta red I think read some were you in Colorado? Is that so what county are you in. I'm from greely area but most of my family is from calhan, out in Eastern elpaso county.

We pull 4x16 with a 7700 Ford. It handles it nicely with front weights. It takes more tractor to carry them around but about the same as a pull type when in the ground. We like it on contours because it moves everything up hill with no dead furrows. John Deere 4200 series is a lot heavier than most others as far as weight goes.

Hoosier,I was raised at Ft.Collins/Wellington.Also spent a fair bit of time at Nunn ....Ault...Greely...What tractor are you useing? You should be able to pickup a nice plow for under $500.

I use an oliver 1850 about 90-95 pro hp. I have seen a 4-16 rollover plow sell here for 3500 I saw a couple jd rollover plows here I n Indiana on tractor house a 3-16 and a 4-16 modle F835 both of them and wanted 1500 and 2000. I just can't justify that kind of money on a plow. I spent 550$ on my 5 bottom Oliver plow, I took off one bottom and I set it on 18in then reset on 16in I can pull it on 5-16 ok 4-18 is ok a bit better then 4-16 I can pull in any ground no matter what. So I left it set as a 4-16.

Here,an 1850 is a 3 bottom tractor.3x14/16 would be perfect. That 706 pictured is turboed to 90+ hp.In the heavy ground/sod,3x14 is plenty. On the light soils,it will pull 4x14.See the extra long frame on the 706/3 bot?that is for the 4th bottom.

Growing up in southeast Colorado our neighbor pulled a 4-bottom IH rollover with his Deere 4240 and you could tell it struggled in places. Another neighbor pulled a similar plow with a 5088 FWA and it appeared to be a good match. I worked for a farmer who had a pair of IH 3-bottom rollovers and put one on a 4030 (80hp) and the other on a 4010 with a ~90hp 4020-sized engine. In either case it was about all the tractor wanted.
