John Deere B Grain Drill

Hello. I am considering buying a John Deere B Grain Drill. I want to plant oats with the drill. The problem is I want to plant the oats in a hay meadow of bahia and coastal in sandy soil. How do I get the oats in the ground and still have the warm season perennials. Will the B drill into the sand? Light disk? Any comments appreciated.

It sounds like you are wanting to do no-till seeding directly into the grass? If so, I believe the B drill will struggle. I also have a B and can tell you that they have very little downpressure capability compared to modern drills, let alone a true no-till drill. I used mine to sow sudan grass directly after baling oats and maybe got the seed in 1/2 inch and this was with essentially no ground cover since I had cut them right at the ground. Granted, our ground is clay which is tougher to penetrate but I still believe you will not be satisfied.

I agree with Brendon that a model B won't achieve much penetration in a grass meadow especially compared to a no-til drill. You possibly could get a stand if grain was planted right after a rain.
