The club has started stripping down the NH baler, hitting all the usual roadblocks - lots of snapped head bolts on the engine which will be a lot of fun to remove, etc.

But, we were lucky enough to get a $300 grant from the 4H mother ship to put towards the restoration project. That's $300 less out of my pocket and will certainly make the project more enjoyable for me!

Leroy, you were keeping your eyes open for a needle for us, but I actually found one while graveyard picking. Ended up costing us $30, so that was a big find. New ones are close to $300.

We're still looking for the little wheel the baler pickup section rides on.

And - what seems even more impossible to find - a glass air cleaner for the wisconsin engine. We've got the whole assembly, but the glass is long gone. (TF-D engine)

If anybody out there knows of one - would sure like to hear about it.

I have a 68 that is going to the bone yard soon. Might have some parts on it that you would need. Not sure what interchanges with a 66. Email is open...

I'm not sure what parts interchange either, and at this point in time I don't even know what, if anything, will need repacing on the baler itself.

We're focusing on the engine right now.

The rest of the baler is pretty solid. I've cycled it a few times by hand and everything's moving properly. I have no idea if the knotters are going to work - that's my biggest concern until I see them knot. Everything looks to be there, but I'm not exactly a new holland expert.

So no list of needs yet. We'll be digging into it deeper over the next couple of weeks.

If you recall, I have a S66 over here that I've been using for the past few years. I know these pretty well (not always by choice), so if you have any questions or want me to look at it, I'd be happy to.

Yes it's an 851

That would be great if you could get me their info.

I haven't had any leads locally. Would MUCH rather find a used one than try to make one.

Hey JRSutton, how are your 4H projects going? This is Dave at the Pratt Farm in Southbridge. You guys came over and we gave you a tedder, a rake and a conditioner. Hope those pieces helped you out.

Hi Dave, nice to hear from you again.

We've made good progress on that JD rake - welded up a new spindle for the bar end, got a bunch of new teeth - new rubber ends for the bars - straightened out all the bars.

All we need now is a stripper, it's missing one.

We brought one up to the local blacksmith in town to see if he could copy it, he had it for some time and recently just gave up.

But I'm far from giving up on it. I'll keep looking or I'll make one myself. Wanting the rake running gives me more motivation than the blacksmith had.

Worst case scenario, JD still sells them for about 250 each... hope to avoid that.

once we get the stripper replaced we'll strip everything and paint it up and make it look brand new - can't wait.

That was a huge donation for us, it'll be our workhorse rake, that's for sure.

We haven't tried the tedder or the crimper. Just haven't had the opportunity this year. It seemed we were always too pressed for time with pending rain to give us any play time.

If nothing else, they're both great conversation pieces for now. Once the rake and baler are done, we'll turn our focus on to those.

Thanks again.

If you wouldn't mind replying to my email here I'd appreciate it, so I can get your email address. I've got it written down, but not sure where it is. I want to be sure to get you some pictures when we finish the rake.

where in Ohio are you?

I've got some friends in Farmerstown (holmes county) that I visit often. In fact, just got back from there last Saturday.

I know right where that wheel is, and should not have any trouble finding it even with the snow we got this morning. should fit in a flat rate box. Need your address again. Was hoping to get to looking for that needle this week but sounds like you are making out good on cost as it probably would have cost that much to ship if I did find it. As for the air cleaner ours never did have a glass type air cleaner, thinking that was aftermarket. On the engine ours was rebored once and was in need of it again when we got rid of the baler but it was because of several heat strokes in one year that is the reason we changed balers, kickers were not to be found to fit. Remember on that engine it fires both plugs at the same time.

Ugg - snow. Hopefully it'll melt fast and you won't see any more for a while.

I was just in Ohio (holmes county), that's where I got the needle. We made it out of there in time to avoid traveling through the storm.

I'll turn my email on with this reply (if I can figure out how to) - if could send me an email, I'll give you my address.

As for both plugs firing together - I did find that out the hard way when we were trying to get it started.

It really confused me, I thought that the magneto was really messed up somehow - but it all finally started to make sense.

And as for not having a kicker - no need here, that's what the 4h kids are for :) We've got a small army of picker-uppers.

As I repeatedly tell them, "it builds character".

And in fact, I believe it does.

You were about 160 mile east of me with about 10 mile farther south or about 3 hours from me at towards the western side of the state and about 35-40 mile from the Indiana border. You were in Amish country there. The Amish that I work with tho are about 55 mile northwest of me in Indiana. I did have your address till the computor crashed. email sent.

Right in the heart of amish country. The friends I stay with are amish.

We went out for the big horse auction in Dover (but not buy a horse - just to watch)

They've got some fantastic bone yards out there for oddball parts. That's where I got the baler needle - stuffed away on a dusty old shelf with about 20 other needles of various shapes and sizes. Don't think those things have seen the light of day in 40 years.

Also got a few better versions of parts for that IH rake we did, those will come in handy too.

Every time I go out there, I seem to find just what I'm looking for.

(except for a glass air cleaner!)

Messicks shows that wheel part #36675. It's $54.87. Does the air cleaner look like this?

I do not know what you are looking at to come up with a price of $54.87 for that wheel.Did not sound right so just checked their web site and that wheel is a total of $103.48 with just the tire at $49.22 and replacement bearings and takes 2 at $ 58.03 each. Did you find the all steel wheel for the plain 66 instead of the rubber tired version for the S66? I grew up with a 66 that was bought new in about 1953, possibly 1954. The 66 was built 10/52 - 7/55 and S66 8/55 - 9/57 Acording to Messicks site. Later I bought a parts 66 and a parts S66 that I was going to make one good baler out of both but never got it done as no longer had the farm to need it. Kept that wheel and it will be on its way today.

That's the glass I'm looking for. I've found it just like that picture several times - as in, attached to a complete engine being sold.

But can't really justify buying a new engine just for the glass!

Really hoping to find somebody with a parts engine, but every time I do, the glass has been broken. Understandable, it's obviously a very fragile part - amazing ANY of them survive.

One thing to try if you can"t find the glass, is to use the clear plastic portion of CD storage case. It"s what I ended up having to do on mine since I couldn"t find another source.

I've been looking for glass companies that could supply just one part - all it has to be is a simple cylinder of glass.

lots of companies make it, but they all tend to sell in large lots.

Might find some glass company willing to help out a good cause, but I'll make a solid effort to find a good used one before I start begging. :)

There are a few of those old engines floating around here. I just wanted to make sure that was the type of glass you needed. I'll look around and see if I can come up with anything.
