Wain Roy backhoe

I have a 1963 wain Roy backhoe. I need some advise on a problem with the hydrostatic transmission. Sometimes it won"t engage forward or reverse. Sometimes it works for a few minutes . I changed the trans fluid. No difference. Does the hydrolic system have anything to do with this issue? Need advise, not a lot of info on the web about this.

it sounds like a filter clogged up and or some sticking valves in transmission valve body to me...filter would prob be first thing i looked for.

Not sure where to find the filter but I'm going out to look .I can't see any lines going to or coming from the transmission. Is it possible that the switching mechanism for forward and reverse is driven by the hydrolic system?
I'm thinking if the valve body is the issue the problem is beyond my ability. Thanks for the help.

well, filter may not be the rite term...i really dont have a clue, but if trans has a sump or pan underneath, there may be a screen inside thats plugged...wish i could tell you more...repost your question on the loader crawler board...more folks over there with heavy equipment.

The filter should be right over the starter, PH8A
Fram. Is your backhoe throttle lever all the way
forward? If it is not could cause reduced trans
function.
