acre counter

is the acre counter on a 70s era grain drill the same as a bale counter on a hay baler they look similar

Without seeing them, I doubt it. One on the grain drill is probably gear driven and turns all the time. Balers usually have an arm that trips the counter, counter doesn't turn.

I believe they are geared different. The drill counter flips many times to count one 1/10 of an acre, I believe.

Baler clicks once to count one bale.

They are the same except there is no white wheel on a bale counter. To use a bale counter on a drill you must remember to use the last wheel for your tenths of an acre.
