Dog bone rivet tool

I have a John Deere 350 sickle bar mower. Recently I got an old "dog bone" tool to repair the rivets in the knife.

Not sure I'm using it correctly. After aligning the tool's bottom mandrel to a rivet head, am I suppose to tighten the outer shaft against the knife, then crank down on the inner shaft to do the business of punching or peening?

But don't forget to tighten down/bottom out the opposite side of the dog bone, I've heard that the center section of the tool can't take the torque and you will break it.

Try replacing the rivets with bolts as you replace sections.
Better yet buy an entire knife with bolted on sections from your nearest farm suppy ( NOT the JD dealer)

I'll second the bolts. never knew working with a sickle could be so ez till i went away rom rivits!
