Hay loader, pop-up,

The guy I worked for in H.S. used these to put up bales. We got to where we could put 125 bales on a farm truck in about 15 minutes. His son driving and one guy stacking, the rest at the barn unloading the previous truck.
Just bought one to use with my son next summer and was curious how many others used them.

The pictures are just ones I found on the internet.

We use a Graves bale loader similar to the one in pics 1 and 3. Use it with 20 ft wagons or 20 ft trailers. My wife drives the tractor. She can KILL a good man stacking and I ain't a good man.

Neighbor had one like in the 2nd picture. That thing could work two good men to death with a good driver. You could hit the bale sideways or straight on and it would suck it up.

There's one similar to the one in the top picture rusting down over here in a fence row; used it for a lot of years before we went with big round bales; generally speaking, they replaced 2 men; ours is/was a Kneib.

I've never used it, but I have one like that in the second picture. Made by New Idea.

It's in pretty good condition, but putting up hay alone still makes it hard to use. May decide to sell it.

When I was a kid I worked at a farm in the summers. we put up about 6000 allis small rounds every summer with a New idea like in the second picture. I followed the baler, tied and straightened the bales. later I drove the WD45 with box wagons and the bale loader. We could put 122 rounds on each wagon. When we got 4 wagons full we took them back to the barn and used a new idea elevator to put them up in the barn. we loaded the second set of wagons and parked in the machine shed and unloaded them the next morning after milking and before lunch.

Have one identical to second picture. Is painted NI colors but tag on it says Kneib or similar. To use with one person you need trailers or truck with sides. Before going to rounds, I used a couple of summers with some old kicker wagons I got - Just had to lower the left side a bit in 2 places for the loader. A real godsend!

Hadn't heard of using them with one person. That might be an idea. I could leave the grain racks on the truck (assuming the pop-up is taller than the racks).
How heavy did you make your bales. I usually make mine around 60lbs. Would worry a bit about the bales popping apart as they landed on the bed.

No where near 60 lbs - Wife wouldn't be able to handle in the barn. More like 40 I guess. I was baling with an old Ford 250 PTO baler and an 8N. Was a struggle with heavy windrows, and the baler didn't like heavy bales. Wouldn't miss a single knot in 500 or 600 bales if I kept it set like that. The bales were pretty dense, just shorter, and stayed together OK.

I think I managed to attach a pic of my bale loader with a regular flat bed JD hay wagon (1942) and our '44A. Couldn't find one with a wagon with sides.
