I am thinking of a new holland 56 side rake to pull with my team of drafts. I don"t have hydraulics. They seem like a good rake. Can you easily get parts?

Any comments appreciated. I am in Oregon so if you know of a near field ready one for sale let me know.

Those little rakes have good parts availableity. The IH 15 and 35;JD 851(?) are also good ones to consider. As was mentioned, they work well with a forecart.

A 56 is a fine rake, no denying. But I'm curious as to why you don't find something with 4 wheels for a team of horses. With a 56 you need another vehicle to hitch the rake to. With a 4 wheel rake it's a simple matter to replace the tongue with a pole and eveners.

I would go with a NH dolly wheel rake. They can be pulled with horses easily. If you have a for-cart then just hook up and go. If not then just remove the short tongue and make a longer one to use with your harness. I have also seen a seat put on the front of the rake with just a small angle bracket.

I have pictured one here so you know what I am talking about. The 56 and 256 both can have a dolly wheel setup.

The people that farm with nothing but horses use the 4 wheel rakes mostly, rebuilding them is what I do, but they do not want the long toung as they just about all use a fore cart with the rake hooked behind no mater if it is the orignal type horse designed for use rake or the parallel bar 2 wheel rake or even the new wheel rakes.
