Will a JD 850 tractor run a 14 T Baler

I have a guy that wants to buy my JD 14t Baler and run it with a JD850 diesel with about 22 PTO horsepower. Will that work if he has flat ground to bale? Thanks

I will probably run it but at what speed. Heck, the baler weighs almost as much as the tractor. I think he is going to have a hard time with it in heavy hay/straw and if he pulls a wagon behind it. The original op manual calls for a two plow tractor to pull/ run it.

Yeah, it will probably work... Now, he"s going to be careful that he takes it easy, and doesn"t let the baler run the tractor. Have run a Oliver t60 and a NH 268 with a Farmall 200. Can be done, but you"re playing with a pretty light tractor there.

We ran a case 200 baler for years with a Farmall Super C without any problems. The old balers used a Wisconsin 2 cylinder air cooled 16 HP engine. The flywheel gives you the momentum to carry the ram through the compression stroke. IMHO

According to Tratordata a JD 850 weighs 2,400 lbs & a Super C weighs 3100 to 5039 lbs. I've pulled a pto model 214 with my JD BO(14 hp) and it weighs 3,375 lbs

I really hate to see new people running old equipment unless they grew up on a farm and understand the risks. Older equipment had a lot fewer safeguards than the newer stuff.

Having said that, then yes, it can be done. Flat ground, light windrows, drop the bales on the ground, go slowly, make sure the slip clutch on the baler works properly, keep the engine at full speed and listen to it grunt.

That toy will probably run it, but it will shake him to no end, and NO wagon. It's liable to kill him....

like most things - probably can do it, but as they say, just because you CAN do something...

That baler probably weighs more than the tractor does. It's gotta be pretty close.

You said he's baling on flat ground - but what about getting to and from the field?

having more weight behind you than under you is never a good ratio when coming down a hill.
