NH 479 Haybine header springs

Just broke a header spring on my NH 479. Have a replacement on the way. Anyone have any tips on how to replace it? Looks a little tough to get it on. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The machine is in good shape otherwise. I have read that when the chain breaks that is the end of the machine. Should it be replaced periodically as preventative maintenance? If so, after how many hours.

Thanks

Mine was new in 75 and never had them break or had them replaced. Do oil them each day it gets used.

Check the chain by grasping at the larger sprocket and see how far it will pull from the sprocket. If it pulls enough that there is daylight between it is probably stating to pull the tooth tips over. If it is it is time for a new chain in order to save the sprockets that can be pricey.

Thanks guys. My main problem is to try and figure out how to lift the head enough to get the new, compressed, spring on. need to close the gap by about a foot.

I put the head on the ground and used my pallet forks on my loader after loosening all the other springs. You could also put blocks under the head or use a floor jack to raise it as well.

OK, got her fixed. Should have read a little closer. Raised it up with the hydraulics, used a a bottle jack and a series of blocks to lift it as high as I could. Lowered it slowly with it blocked, and there it was. Don't have a loader but it worked great. Thanks.
