# 72 1/2 steel chain?

Back for more help guys.

Tried the old McCormick binder out at the weekend, and it Did work!..........but the chain on the bullwheel wanted to ride up on the sprockets.
Tried tightening up the idler a bit (it has spring tension) and it was OK for a while, then in a thick green patch, the chain let go.
I am looking to replace the drive chain, but the book says it takes;
"...58 links of # 72 1/2 steel chain"

I called the local old farm supply place, and he has never heard of number 72 1/2 chain.
Any ideas if the IH number crosses with anything else??

That is a n old chain size thats been obsolete for years.IRRC,Central tractor/nnalert used to carry that chain.That will still be IDed by that #.Take a sample link to Implement dealers,bearing supplys,Fastener stores,etc.McMaster-Carr will probably have it.I am mot surprised that the store clerk had never heard of that,I would have been surprised if he even knew what it was!

Good site!

Anyone have sources for the sprockets for steel detachable chain? I got a wire winder that wore out the sprockets. Can switch it to roller chain I suppose, but just curious since the chain is all available, if the sprockets are anywhere.

As a suggestion, pull both sprockets off the machine, and take them to a welding shop or dealer that carries newer sprocets, and match them upto something close and reinstall them with a new chain. This has worked for me a couple of times, and I have been very happy with it.

What size chain, Paul? Shoup lists weld-a-hub sprockets for 55 and 62 detachable link chain.

Evening Delta,

I took a few links of chain in to the farm supply place. It has been taken over by NAPA, but the old boy still has piles of his own stuff in the back room. He's normally pretty good at finding old stuff, but I think his eyes are not so good these days, as he had me measure the links, then phoned his supplier, who told him that this size was in his book, and sure enough it was!........so, I ordered a roll and it should be in tommorow.

Thanks for the input to everyone. I'll see how the chain fits on the original sprockets, as it isn't so easy pulling the sprockets off to get new ones.

Depending on the type of sprocket I know a guy that could make it. He made the bearings for Richard's binder.

Got my chain from the old guy at NAPA,but looked up Farmchains this morning.
Wish I'd had the time to get some from "Farmchains"
NAPA cost me $115.00, and Farmchains is only $67.60!! (10' roll)

No 72 i/2" chain can still be purchased from some industrial supply houses. Not dommon, but it is still available.
