Farmall Mower #12

I"ve got a #12 mower mounted on one of my F-14"s. I tore apart the gear box because the small flywheel that the pitman attaches to, has to move about 1" before the gears engage. I thought that was too much. I"m not having much luck searching the Internet for these gears. They actually don"t look too bad, I was just trying to tighten things up a bit. Am I thinking wrong? Where do I start looking for these gears? The part numbers are M 2473, M 2474 and M 2475. Maybe there is supposed to be that much "slop"?

I've got one of those but never had the gearbox apart.I would check the center gear bushing or bearing, as any looseness here would allow side movement and increased backlash, assuming the PTO and flywheel shafts aren't loose in their respective gears. It's hard for me to believe the gears themselves could be worn out. If you're judging the gears to be worn because of their rough finish, that's not really accurate. I've seen lots of I.H. gears from the 30s and 40s all look the same way. But looks aside, they were definitely properly hardened.

The top gear that is driven by the PTO is on a splined shaft. No slop. The center gear is on an idler shaft with a roller bearing. No slop. The bottom gear, that drives the pitman arm, is also on a splined shaft. No slop. There is no way to tighten up the bottom gear to the idler gear, say by removing shims, as there aren't any. That's where I think there is too much backlash. I guess I'm just trying to be too particular. I'll put it back together with new tapered roller bearings on the upper and lower shafts as well as new seals and run it. Thanks for your response.
