Kuhn 600 II disc cutter

new 2 baling

New User
I just bought a hopefully gently used Kuhn disc cutter. It seems to run well, but has a small leak in the cutter bar. I can't seem to find any Kuhn parts on line, or a diagram showing what may be leaking. Any ideas? Anyone know of which JD or other disc mower parts might be interchangeable?

Here's parts schematics.

Thanks to both of you. Does the gear oil in the cutter bar just coat all of those gears? Does a leak mean that the bar itself has a hole? It didn't really leak much, I ran it for about an hour and noticed a very small amount of oil, with no discernible drop in the oil reservoir.

Fill the cutter bed to the proper level and park it on clean papers or something and look to see where it is leaking after it has sat there a day or so. I had a Kuhn cutter bed that had a hair-line crack or slit; had to have it braised.

The real problem with these cutter bars is they do not have a way to check the correct oil level. You drain them and then put back in a measured amount. Not enough and they will ruin the bearings or too much and they will blow the seals when they get hot.

I would bet that if you contact Kuhn they can get you a operators manual.

Also I would find out exactly where you are leaking oil. Even a small leak on these can be disastrous. They do not have much oil in them to start with.

The mounted mowers are generally checked with the bar in the vertical position. Just fill it to the level plug about 2' up the bar.
Mower conditioners.... like the FC series... you are quite correct. They require a measured amount.

Rod you could very well be correct. I have only been around two of the arm mowers. I never sold one myself. We usually need to condition the hay around here. The guys that do have arm type disk mowers around here could tear up an anvil with a tooth pick so they are not a good indicator of how they last/work.

Personally I run from any Kuhn style cutter bar. The JD ones are expensive to fix. Plus they are a real PIA to work on. I would like to stangle the engineer that though a ten foot long oring would be a good idea to seal a gear case. Plus the hundred bolts holding it together. I know there are not that many but it seems like it when you are holding that darn oring in while some one puts the bolts in.

My one friend would not listen to me. He found a JD 1327 Mower-conditioner this spring. I told him to check it over real good before he used it. Well he washed and polished the shiny paint up but did not drain and refill the cutter bar. All was well on the first crop. Second crop he gernaded the cutter bar. With even using some of the old parts that where just "kind" of good he spent over $3000 in parts. He now had just about double in it what it is worth. He could have boughten a newer style with the segmented cutter bar for what he has in it now. Some guys have to really pay for that non-college education. LOL

You're right... those bars are a royal mother.... to take apart. That said... the ones that have had their oil maintained and changed haven't given much trouble around here. Mine has never been apart (yet) in 20 years.
I've got a 1460 Deere with the modular Kuhn FC bar and I'm changing modules in that with more frequency that I care to... due to rocks mostly. The old GMD bar, as far as I'm concerned... was a LOT tougher.
The 1327 used that bar (GMD)... but as you well know, no oil and they don't last.

Personally I'm not a fan of the shaft drive bars.
