Gehl 970 chopper box

Has anyone ever taken the pto shaft off of a gehl 970? The apron chain jumped off and jammed up resulting in the pto shaft twisting in half, i would like to get it out instead of welding it while it's still on the wagon. Thanks

Did it break the yoke? Ours twisted the hollow tube and broke the yoke on the PTO end. The wagon side was still ok. I made up a socket to try getting the yoke off the wagon end to replace the bearing behind it, but even with a co-workers snap-on impact on it, and heated, and then heated and cooled, it didn't budge. I torched the bearing off, polished up the shaft good from the back and slid a new bearing on from the back.

We used a shaft we kept off another wagon (H&S) that we scrapped out years ago, just put in a new cross on both ends and that part was good to go.

no ours twisted the 2 parts of the shaft into one about 2 feet from the wagon both yokes are fine. i would like to get it off the wagon, if i can so dont have to weld and grind it while its still on the wagon. i figure it must come apart in the safety clutch. somehow.

Cut the cross apart at the yoke. That's how that style (pound or press in pins) comes apart, and your PTO shaft is junk anyway. Cut the cross, stay away from the yoke on the wagon as that's the only part you'll save, that and the splined yoke 1/2 on the other end. You will be able to pound in new pins for a new cross with it still attatched to the wagon.
