Round baler opinions

Looking for opinions/experience on a John Deere 510 and Vermeer 605F round balers, both used.

I would take a Vermeer 605F over a JD 510 BUT if I had a choice of a later model of any brand that was open throat with hyd tension I'd take the latter. JD 510's were JD second attempt to build rd hay balers. JD 530's are light years ahead of a 510.

I'm in the house after repairs to the 605F. It gets my stuff baled, but I dream of getting a better model.

I wouldn't consider a JD 510, that would be going backwards.

Agreed with the last two posts. Given those two choices, the vermeer wins hands down. You couldn't give me a JD 510. With that said, the later deere balers were/are good. I personally have a New Idea 486 and love it (case ih 3650 is the same baler). Alot of guys don't like the soft core but you can bale some wet stuff and the bales will "air" out and not spoil. The critters like eating them better also because they don't have to rip and tear, but they are more difficult to fork off of if needed. Good luck, there's alot of good balers out there.

I don't know the model, but my nephew had a Vermeer that he used for 23 years to bale hay for 125 beef cows plus calves for most of the winter.

He traded it on a new Vermeer bales last year and likes it a lot.

I owned the smaller brother to the 510..a 410. Bought new in 1982 and kept/used it for 20 years. It was very reliable and once you got used to its idiosyncrasies it would work reasonably well. It's somewhat of a "trick" to start a bale ... my advise read the manual before you use it. The biggest problem was the press roller..as it essentially eliminated clover and alfalfa leaves before the dry hay reached the chamber... not at all like the open throat designs of today. I often told people that I had the worst haying equipment for saving clover and alfalfa leaves... a JD 410 and a New Holland side rake that I called the hay beater. I now own an open throat JD 447 and a Miller-Pro rotary rake.... and make much better hay..

Jim has nailed this one. Both balers will bale hay but the auctions ar full of the JD510 balers that do not sell for $1000. The Vermeer actually could be older than the JD510 but is likely worth $500-1000 more in this situation. Check the condition of the belts. A new set of belts is worth as much as the baler.

I emailed you about how to correctly set the gap on the bevel gears in the main gearbox on my 7030 cutter disc mower but you evidently never received it although the email never came back non-deliverable. The tech manual states to check with a dial indicator for .005-.010 inch play but I didn't know how to correctly check that.
