So i ended up buying a Ford 151 4 bottom plow. They are calling for rain later this week but id like to get the ground plowed so i can get some hay planted before the rain but the ground is so damned hard i cant keep the furrows from tripping.

My plow has the dual spring resets on each bottom, my question is, how tight can i put those springs and still be safe? theres 4-6 inches of threads that i can tighten down, its set about halfway of a touch less then half

Yes dry hard ground will make them trip without hitting a rock. I had the same trouble last fall. Instead of changing everything only to change back when you return to more normal rain patterns or even a different field, I just set the depth a little shallower. That solved the problem for me.

I think the spring adjustment you are seeing is for how hard the bottoms reset once tripped, the breakaway setting should be a shim under the part where it stops against the beam. Not sure what it is on your plow which are the same as oliver and case plows of that vintage. On our Melrow plow they had a half moon shaped stop that you had to change and Jd plows had shims you could add or remove. I think yours has shims too. We had the same problem you are having with our Melrow in our heavy clay, it would sometimes trip all 5 bottoms at once til I got new thinner stops.

don't know how they do things your way but around here we never plow before planting hay as you can't make a good firm seed bed,if you haven't used it how do you know you have a problem?

this is how its done here when fall seeding.

I used the plow today and thats what was happening. As for it being set from the previous owner, i dont think it was. This plow was bought new 35 years ago buy a man and used to plow up 60 acres of corn one fall then the man passed away. The mans wife rented the farm out for 20 yeasr until she passed away. The son got the farm when she was gone and hes rented it out for the last 15 years. This plow has been sitting in the back corner of the shed for 34 years.

So tonight i went back out and did some measuring, i noticed the front furrow was tripping the least so i measured the spring and thread length on it and it was 2" of thread showing so i set the other 3 to that. Ill go try it again in the morning

I doubt you will have any trouble with just hard ground.Rocks are where you need trip bottoms. If you tighten them tight enough to not trip occationally in hard ground,it wont trip on a rock.then you really tear things all to he!!

they arent tripping "occasionally", occasionally they DONT trip and its not just one or 2 furrows, its all of them

I would deliberately trip them and make sure they will trip. Then leave them be and see if they trip. The past user would have them close enough to start with.
